Fallon Sherrock Draws With Duzza On Darts Premier League Night 2

Fallon Sherrock Draws With Duzza On Darts Premier League Night 2

Fallon Sherrock

All eyes were on the Queen Of The Palace Fallon Sherrock as she stepped back into the PDC spotlight on Thursday. Shockwave Sherrock was taking her turn as the latest challenger and actually came within two darts of yet another history-making moment by almost beating Glen Durrant, which would have been by far her biggest scalp yet.

A hugely under pressure Duzza managed to salvage a draw with the last throw of his darts meaning Sherrock, who had the fans firmly on her side, had to settle for a 6-6 draw against the former BDO World Champion.

Odds on favourite Durrant wasted five darts with the match at 3-2, allowing Sherrock to break first before she raced ahead 4-3. Before long, she stretched her lead to 5-3 as Duzza looked like wilting under the pressure of a match he admitted beforehand he was dreading and his missed doubles soon began to stack up.

With defeat looming, Duzza managed to dig deep and recompose himself and, with a 1art hold of throw, brought himself back in the match before wasting three more shots at double 16, allowing Sherrock to book herself a draw on her next visit. With two legs remaining, Duzza began to save his blushes and took the last two of the match, staving off defeat with one and banking a draw with the other when he finally found the elusive double 16 with his last dart in hand.

A recap of Night Two

Peter Wright was dealing with an ankle injury during his match up with Gary Anderson. Snakebite, whose usual pre-game dance was much hampered and shortened, picked up the unusual injury lifting his wife Jo’s suitcases out of the car on arrival at their hotel. Nevertheless, despite his pain, he had enough about him to take a share of the points in this all Scottish and good-natured affair.

In a high-quality game, both World Cup winning partners averaged above 100, but it was the limping Wright who took the initiative when he moved into a 4-2 lead after landing five maximums. Anderson came back into the match though and before long had moved 5-4 ahead thanks to a 15-darter. As the game moved forward on throw, Anderson went 6-5 ahead, ensuring he would at least get a draw but Snakebite landed his sixth 180 of the match before the deciding leg before checking out on 101 to share the spoils.

The following game of the night provided the fans with the night’s third draw as Gerwyn Price staged a superb comeback from 6-2 down against Michael Smith. Bully Boy was throwing brilliantly in the early stages and The Iceman, who himself was throwing well and averaging over a ton, simply couldn’t live with his opponent, who took out the next three legs. Price managed to keep his hopes alive in the following leg, and as the Welshman was hanging in there, Smith missed two match darts in the 10th to let Price off the hook. Having somehow survived, Price turned the game on its head completely and the two-time Grand Slam of Darts champion completed his comeback when he landed a lifesaving 14-darter.

After three draws, there was no such charity on show in the final match of the night where Michael van Gerwen absolutely annihilated Daryl Gurney in a 7-1 riot. The five-time champion is the only player left in the mix with a 100% record and averaged 105.05 while pinning seven of his 11 attempts at doubles.

Mighty Mike opened up proceedings with a 13-darter which he followed up with a 104 checkout as he aimed to exact the 11th whitewash in Premier League history, which also would have been MVG’s fourth, as he breezed to a 6-0 lead. Gurney avoided such an indignity by taking the seventh, but there was no way back for Superchin as MVG takes his seat at the top of the table.

In Night 2’s opener, Rob Cross claimed a 7-5 win over Nathan Aspinall. It was a tight match and level as late on as 5-5, before Voltage turned on the afterburners in the final leg, so much so that commentator Wayne Mardle joked he’d now moved into Lincolnshire. With double 16 waiting, Voltage spurned all three efforts and should really have been punished by The Asp. The newcomer left himself with 54 to allow Cross another visit and three more chances, the first two of which were also wasted by the former electrician.

Voltage’s fifth missed dart landed awkwardly and completely obscured the chucker’s view forcing him to step widely to the right, hence the Mardle gag, but from there landed the miracle shot that had somehow evaded him from the far easier oche before closing out the match in the final leg with a 12-dart break of throw.

Premier League of Darts Night Three betting tips

Night 3 of the Premier League Darts takes us to the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff. As we stand with two weeks gone, the league table has a familiar look to it with Michael van Gerwen sitting top of the pile, Glen Durrant is in second and Rob Cross is third.

It’s Voltage, who is first out, as he takes on world champ Peter Wright. Snakebite is still to win a game after his two Premier League bouts so far, having lost to van Gerwen a fortnight ago and then a draw with Gary Anderson last week. In truth, he played well in both games and was unplayable at times, but Cross has come firing out of the blocks this season and this could well be the third match for Wright in which he fails to win. I don’t think he’ll lose though so this tight affair could possibly end in a share of the spoils. Snakey is the number one 180 chucker in the competition so far this season with 10 so there is a market there for his fans to exploit if they so wish. Wright is 5/6 to score the most 180s again with Betway.

Challenger Jonny Clayton takes on Michael Smith next in a matchup that could be a tougher fight for Bully Boy than the others will face when they take on a local contender. That’s because, of all the challengers competing in the Premier League this year, no one is ranked higher than the world number 16. This, plus the vociferous home support cheering on their fellow Welshman, means Smith definitely has his work cut out this week. Last week, he was imperious for long periods in a game he somehow let slip against another Welshman, Gerwyn Price. If he maintains that form he should just about take the points here too.

Michael van Gerwen goes up against Nathan Aspinall in the follow-up. MVG has a perfect record so far with two wins out of two while The Asp has a win on the board also. It’s hard to make a case for Aspinall here though in his bid for a second win as Mighty Mike is in such form and will almost certainly make it three from three.

The crowd will be cheering – which makes a change – for The Iceman in match four as Gerwyn Price steps out for his match with Daryl Gurney. While neither player has won a game in this year’s Premier League, Price can at least take heart from the fact that he hasn’t lost either. Superchin, on the other hand, has lost both so far and was on the end of a whooping last week only narrowly managing to avoid a whitewash. Price should get his first win here and I think he will.

We close the night with 2nd placed Glen Durrant and Gary Anderson, who sits in 4th. Anderson has been the more consistent in his two games, following up his victory over Gurney by tying with Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright a week ago in Nottingham. Duzza was excellent in his first week but was shaky last week against Fallon Sherrock as he let the pressure get to him. He held his nerve to fight back and draw the game and a tie wouldn’t surprise this week in the Welsh capital either.

Michael van Gerwen Makes Winning Start To Darts Premier League

MVG Darts Premier League

Michael van Gerwen put his early-season shaky form behind him to beat world champion Peter Wright 7-5 in a thriller of a World Championship rematch on Premier League opening night.

Wright followed his Ally Pally triumph by winning the season’s first tourney, The Darts Masters, last week and initially looked in good shape in front of the Aberdeen crowd. Snakebite raced into an early 2-0 lead thanks to a 14-darter and a 120 checkout but will rue not making it three after he missed a hat trick of darts at tops to let the world number one back into the game.

Wright repeated the trick in the fourth leg which proved to be the only invitation the Dutchman needed to get back on level terms. The game then went with throw as both players produced high-quality darts before Mighty Mike took out the remaining two legs to get his campaign off to a winning start.

A review of Night 1

In the night’s opener, debutant Glen Durrant got off to a winning start with a 7-3 victory over 2018 runner-up Michael ‘Bully Boy’ Smith. Duzza had been a part of the previous season’s league as one of the nine challengers but has this year been promoted to a full-time Premier League player. His one game last season also happened to be in Scotland when he lost to Daryl Gurney in Glasgow. There were no such problems this time around as he landed nine doubles while Smith, who lost in the Masters final a week ago, wasted five of his eight attempts.

The Flying Scotsman made his return to DPL action on Thursday after missing out a year ago. Much to the delight of the 7,000-strong crowd in Aberdeen, Gary Anderson managed to turnaround a potential defeat when he fought back from a 5-4 deficit against Daryl Gurney. Superchin was the subject of boos which seemed to work after he missed eight darts at a double plus later on another shot at tops for what would have been a point. These dropped shots allowed Anderson to level the match with a 13-darter before scooping the remaining legs also.

Another debutant took part in the night’s fourth fixture as Nathan Aspinall took on this week’s contender John ‘The Highlander’ Henderson, playing in front of his home crowd. This was a crowd that would leave disappointed, however, as The Asp ran out a 7-3 winner in front of 7,000 fans in Aberdeen. Last year, Henderson managed to bag himself a 6-6 draw with Michael van Gerwen but such a result – and payday – wasn’t to be this year as the UK Open champion was simply too good.

Gerwyn Price just about managed to salvage a draw from his 6-6 draw with Rob Cross. It was a match that never looked like it would get away from The Iceman as he landed three successive legs in just 39 darts, including a brilliant 124 checkout, to take a 4-2 lead. This preceded Voltage securing four legs on the trot including a 100 checkout in a 12-darter to go 6-4 up. The Grand Slam of Darts champion then forced and won a deciding leg to take a point.

Darts Premier League Night 2 Betting Tips

Thursday sees the second round of Premier League games, brought to you from the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham. Dubbed the Sherrock of Nottingham, Fallon Sherrock, who became the first woman to win a match at the PDC World Championships in December, will this week become the first female to play in the Darts Premier League, if only as a local challenger. As ever, the games will all be broadcast live on Sky Sports and the action gets underway from 19.00 GMT.

Durrant vs Aspinall

As we stand, the two new boys – Glen Durrant and Nathan Aspinall – are out in front, although with one match played each so far this isn’t saying much. The Asp is one of the first out on the night as he takes on Rob Cross who recorded an average of 100.10 during his 6-6 draw with Gerwyn Price in Aberdeen. Aspinall banked a decent win but only hit a low average of 89.19 which surely won’t be enough against Voltage.

He is capable but will definitely need to up his game against Cross who I believe will record his first win in the league this season.

Price vs Smith

Match two pits Gerwyn Price against Michael Smith in a match The Iceman will surely look on as a must-win. Price can be happy with the manner of his draw with Rob Cross a week ago, even if he probably should have won. Bully Boy, however, blew his chance against Glen Durrant and could be heading for two defeats in as many matches.

Anderson vs Wright

It’s an all Scots affair for match-three where Gary Anderson meets Peter Wright. Anderson already has a win under his belt after he critically dismissed Daryl Gurney. Wright, however, chucked his chance of a win away when he had MVG on the ropes a week ago.

Snakebite can at least take heart from winning five legs and actually outperformed Anderson in most of the key stats in Aberdeen, hitting the most 180s and having the highest checkout at 6.00, which is enough to tempt me to get behind the world champion this week too.

Sherrock vs Durrant

It’s time for Fallon Sherrock next in a match her opponent, Glen Durrant, admits he is dreading. Duzza should be expecting the crowd to back the underdog and so knows that the crowd will be against him but it shouldn’t impact his ability to take maximum points here.

Duzza should win but for Sherrock fans to find value, back Sherrock to once again produce the highest checkout, as she did in all three of her World Championship matches. For fans of the Queen of the Palace, such an outcome is worth 13/8 at Bet365.

Gurney vs van Gerwen

Daryl Gurney and Michael van Gerwen close out the night in a match that it is hard to see the Dutchman losing. Gurney was off his game last week in his defeat to Anderson which is not the form you’re looking for with MVG incoming. Hope can be found in the fact that Mighty Mike lost both of his league matches with Gurney last season before knocking Superchin out in the semi-finals and much the same should be expected this week in Nottingham.

  • (13/8) Rob Cross (7/2) Nathan Aspinall (6/5)
  • (10/11) Gerwyn Price (7/2) Michael Smith (11/5)
  • (13/8) Gary Anderson (7/2) Peter Wright (6/5)
  • (3/10) Glen Durrant (13/2) Fallon Sherrock (13/2)
  • (11/2) Daryl Gurney (5/1) Michael van Gerwen (4/11)

World Champion Peter Wright Adds Darts Masters To His Collection

World Champion Peter Wright Adds Darts Masters To His Collection

Darts Premier League 2020 Start

Peter Wright won his second major title in a month and third solo title of his career after he beat Michael Smith in the Masters final at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes last weekend. Wright, once a regular final loser, emerged victorious after a dramatic 11-10 victory over Smith, himself now becoming the new regular final loser, to win his second televised tournament in a row.

Snakebite, 50, began the new season how he finished the last but needed to survive three match darts in the deciding leg to do so. A clearly crushed Bully Boy was himself seeking his maiden major title after being a losing finalist in the World Championships, World Matchplay and the Premier League in the last couple of years. He can at least take inspiration from Wright’s turnaround in fortune. After all, Snakebite had lost 10 of his previous 11 finals before finally securing his maiden PDC title, the UK Open, in 2018, almost two years before his World Championships win.

Twice Snakebite established a three-leg lead, at 5-2 and 8-5, only for Bully Boy to reduce the deficit to 8-7. Smith then took out a checkout of 130 to complete a 15-darter to bring the game level but missed tops for a break of throw in the follow up which allowed Wright to creep ahead once more. Snakebite then missed the chance to move two ahead when he missed three clear darts at double 16 for a 10-8 lead.

Bully Boy then landed an 11-darter to take the match into a deciding leg before finding himself looking at a checkout of 98 with Snakebite far behind on 287. With the match his to lose, Smith managed to do exactly that by landing a mere 58, leaving tops for the finish. Agonisingly, he missed all three attempts after the Snakebite’s visit of 171 and would not get the chance to return as Wright cleared up in his next visit to take another major title.

On his way to the final, Wright took care of Joe Cullen on Saturday night before recording the first-ever Masters whitewash against Dave Chisnall and overcoming World Cup-winning team-mate Gary Anderson in the semi-finals. Winner of the previous five events, Michael van Gerwen was eliminated in the first round when he was defeated 6-10 by Jonny Clayton.

Darts Premier League Betting Tips

The Premier League Darts gets underway again on Thursday making its first stop in Aberdeen. The first night throws up a potential predictor for how the tournament might play out as a whole when Michael van Gerwen takes on Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright in the opening night’s show-stopper. This tournament will ask some truly tough questions of Wright, particularly about his long term consistency. After back-to-back major wins, we now know that he is capable of producing regular tournament wins, but the Premier League is a weekly event from now until mid-May. Too many sloppy weeks can prove costly as Snakebite found out this time last year.

As the pair meet this weekend, Wright is full of confidence, unlike MVG who went in round one of the Masters. But confidence will fluctuate over the following four months which is something for Snakebite backers to remember before jumping on Betway’s 13/2 outright price. As for the Dutchman, he comes into the tournament as the even-money favourite at bet365 and with some justification too. He is the four-time reigning champion and has won five Premier League titles overall. Mighty Mike has also won the league section of Premier League darts in all seven of the seasons in which he has competed. In the Van Gerwen vs The Field market, you can back anyone else to triumph at 10/11 with Betway.

The other obvious contender to topple van Gerwen is Gerwyn Price. Price, who disappointed at the Masters last week, was looking very strong at the end of the 2019 season and worked his way up to number two in the world. The Iceman lost in the semi-finals of the World Championship to Wright but before that he won the Grand Slam of Darts for the second year running while also making the final of the Players Championship. Last year, he came fifth in this competition, missing out on London but his season grew not long after that and he is now one of the stellar names on the tour. Again, this tournament, more than any other, will pose the tough questions but bet365’s 6/1 looks interesting to say the least.

Former two-time league champion Gary Anderson beat Price in Milton Keynes on Saturday and, while his back still throws up questions, you can never rule out The Flying Scotsman. Anderson was unable to compete last year so he would love to put on a show on his return and is the best price of 12/1 with Betway.

Rob Cross is out of form right now and has been since the summer when he scooped the World Matchplay. A win in this tournament would give Voltage the Triple Crown, albeit not in the same year. So long as he can stay in touch in or around the top four, his form could return in time for London so his price of 12/1 is not to be sniffed at.

Much the same could be said for Michael Smith, who came second in 2018, one of four times he has been a losing finalist. Like Wright, you feel the good times will come eventually and Bully Boy has all the tools needed to do great things in the sport. Betway is offering 22/1 on Smith for anyone interested. Debutant Nathan Aspinall is 20/1 with Betway who has priced both Daryl Gurney and Glen Durrant, another newcomer save for a contender appearance last year, at 28/1.

At the opposite end of the table, bet365 consider Daryl Gurney to be the 5/2 favourite to be relegated. Debutants can often struggle in their first Premier League season and the same bookmaker have priced Glen Durrant at 11/4 and Nathan Aspinall 11/2 to bow out on Judgement Night in Rotterdam.

2020 Premier League Darts Night 1

  • (13/10) Michael Smith – 7/2 – Glen Durrant (6/4)
  • (1/1) Gary Anderson – 7/2 – Daryl Gurney (2/1)
  • (10/11) Michael van Gerwen – 7/2 – Peter Wright (9/4)
  • (5/6) Nathan Aspinall – 7/2 – John Henderson (Contender) (5/2)
  • (1/1) Gerwyn Price – 7/2 – Rob Cross (2/1)

Above prices available at Betway

Michael Smith v Glen Durrant

As for this week’s fixtures, Michael Smith and Glen Durrant are first up. For Durrant, this is a first but for Smith this is familiar territory. Following his strong showing at the Masters where he missed three tournament darts, Smith will surely bounce back strongly. He is after all used to getting over final disappointments. Three-time BDO world champion, Durrant performed solidly in his maiden PDC season last year, reaching numerous semi-finals but that may not be enough here and Bully Boy should be favoured for the win.

Gary Anderson v Daryl Gurney

Gary Anderson and Daryl Gurney follow up to the oche for match 2. Anderson will have the Scottish crowd on his side and looked good during his Masters quarter-final demolition of Gerwyn Price so is the strong favourite for this tie. Any hope for Superchin can be found in his relatively strong record against The Flying Scotsman, who he has beaten eight times. That said, he has also lost eight times to this opponent, which will likely read nine by the time they are finished here.

Michael van Gerwen v Peter Wright

An absolute blockbuster of a match on night one as world champions collide. The current world champ, Peter Wright is unstoppable at the moment, winning back-to-back trophies, the first of which changed his life forever. This, of course, was his New Year’s Day Ally Pally win over tonight’s opponent Michael van Gerwen, which he hasn’t looked back from. Another player to enjoy home support, Snakebite can beat MVG again here – if not in the overall tournament – especially given Mighty Mike’s problematic switch to his new Winmau darts, something Peter Wright knows all about. The Scot has won two of their last three encounters and MVG suffered an early exit to Jonny Clayton in the Masters. That though will sting and Snakebite could well feel the Dutchman’s wrath. Time will tell.

Nathan Aspinall v John Henderson (Contender)

Nathan Aspinall meets John Henderson the first of nine challengers (contenders/local heroes) next. Aspinall’s growing reputation was further demonstrated with a strong performance at the Masters where he lost 11-10 in the semi-final to Michael Smith. Scottish Henderson will have the home fans rooting for him but Aspinall has more than enough to silence the crowd and get his debut DPL season off to the best possible start.

Gerwyn Price v Rob Cross

The last match of the night pits Gerwyn Price against Rob Cross. Price lost badly to Anderson at The Masters over the weekend so he will need to bounce back, something he is more than capable of. Voltage has been playing poorly for some time now and will need to find some form or he could face a tough tournament. He does have the quality to turn things around at least. The head-to-head between these two reads six wins each, but the real detail is that The Iceman has won four of their last five meetings and, as one of the favourites for the tournament, will want to get off to a great start.

It will be interesting to see how the crowd reacts to Price, given the boos that followed him venue to venue 12 months ago. At the World Championships, the dissent was rightly dimmed but his tetchy exit at the hands of Peter Wright (a Scot) and his previous beef with Gary Anderson (also Scottish) could see the noise against him grow once again. This could provide an avenue of hope for Rob Cross to get at least a point as the Darts Premier League gets rolling in 2020.
