Michael van Gerwen Out On The Opening Night Of The World Matchplay

MVG Matckplay Loss on Opening Night

The Darts World Matchplay betting was blown wide open in a huge upset on the opening night at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens as the world number one and odds-on pre-tournament favourite, Michael van Gerwen was knocked out by countryman Jeffrey De Zwaan.

With 15 victories for 2018 so far, Mighty Mike had been aiming to win his third World Matchplay title , including the Darts Premier League and the Masters. Unfortunately for MVG, he fell one victory short after losing 10-6 to JDZ, who also beat MVG in the third round of the UK Open. As a result, every player has seen their odds slashed for glory, with Gary Anderson now Betway’s favourite at 11/4 while Rob Cross is 4/1 and Peter Wright now at 13/2.

With the game tied at 6-6, 22-year-old De Zwaan — ranked 68 in the world — reeled off the final four legs to set the Winter Gardens atmosphere alight. In doing so, he set up a second round clash with Adrian ‘Jackpot’ Lewis, who eliminated James Wilson 10-8 earlier in the opening match of the night. A one-time finalist here, Lewis — 12/1 for the outright win — began strongly, taking the opening two legs before Wilson fought back to lead 7-3. Two-time world champion Lewis then dug deep to get back in the match and closed to within a leg of victory at 9-8 before landing a superb 116 finish and secure his place in the second round.

Other Matchplay action

Elsewhere, Premier League runner-up Michael SmithJonny Clayton 10-6 in the last match of the night. Bully Boy, fresh from claiming the Shanghai Darts Masters title, was averaging 10 points more than Clayton, but was only leading by 7 legs to 6 before winning the final three legs to set up an intriguing tie with Dave ‘Chizzy’ Chisnall in round two. Chizzy was the 10-4 winner in his match against Keegan Brown.

On the Sunday, Gary Anderson and Rob Cross both reached the second round comfortably. The Matchplay title has always eluded The Flying Scotsman but after MVG’s elimination a night before, Anderson must surely now fancy his chances. He opened up against Stephen ‘Bullet’ Bunting, who was ahead 5-3 at one point, only for the two-time world champion to win six of the next seven legs to move to the brink of victory. The Bullet pulled a leg back but Anderson, who averaged 97.48, won the final leg to take the tie. He will now meet Raymond van Barneveld after beating Kyle Anderson 10-6 in Sunday’s final match.

World champion Rob ‘Voltage’ Cross, the tournament’s second favourite, brushed aside Mervyn King 10-5, recording the highest average of the tournament so far with 98.58 to set up a second round clash with Darren Webster. Last week we told you to keep an eye on two-time quarter-finalist Mensur Suljovic. Well, he is still going strong and recorded his first win over Steve Beaton in nine attempts with a 10-6 victory. Betway have The Big Gentle priced at 12/1 for an outright tournament victory.

One player not making it through to the second round is Gerwyn Price who was thrashed 10-3 by Joe Cullen, the highest ranked non-seeded player heading into the tournament. Cullen now meets 18/1 shot Daryl Gurney who is safely through following his 12-10 comeback victory over Steve West.

Peter Wright nailed a 170 checkout as he swept aside Jelle Klaasen 10-5 in a match where Snakebite opened up a 6-1 lead but then hobbled over the finish line as his Dutch rival showed resistance. He now plays Kim Huybrechts on Wednesday night when James Wade will also be meeting Simon Whitlock, while Mensur Suljovic goes against Ian White and Rob Cross meets Darren Webster.

Michael van Gerwen Lands A Nine-Dart Finish In Hamburg

MVG Dominates in Hamburg

The first nine-dart finish in the PDC European Tour in five years was recorded last weekend by, who else, Michael van Gerwen as he overcame Ryan Joyce in Hamburg on Saturday night. The last nine-darter on the European Tour was achieved by Ross Smith in the Gibraltar Darts Trophy five years and a day earlier.

The Dutchman’s perfect leg came during his 6-2 win over qualifier Joyce from Newcastle, as MVG sought out a sixth European Tour triumph of 2018. His sixth European Tour event title, which also happened to be his 15th PDC title of 2018, came after defeating William O’Connor 8-2 in the European Darts Matchplay final.

On his way to the final, Mighty Mike beat Robert Thornton 6-1, Ian White 6-4 and Stephen Bunting 7-4 before destroying O’Connor, who was playing in his first ever European Tour final. The Dutchman has now triumphed in 26 European Tour events and has 109 career singles titles in total.

Attention now turns to the Las Vegas Strip, specifically the South Pacific Ballroom at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino which will host the North American Darts Championship and U.S. Darts Masters from Thursday July 5 through Saturday July 7.

Thursday will see eight domestic qualifiers battle for the North American Darts Championship, all hoping to emulate 2017’s champion, South Dakota policeman Willard Bruguier to win a place in the World Championship in London this December.

Eight of the world’s top stars will join their North American rivals to compete on Friday, July 6 in the opening day of the U.S. Darts Masters. The action will conclude on Saturday, July 7 with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

Players confirmed to be there include the reigning champion Michael Van Gerwen, World Champion Rob Cross, Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright, two-time World Champion Gary Anderson, James Wade, Michael Smith, Daryl Gurney and Gerwyn Price.

The Dutch world number one is, of course, the favourite with the online bookmakers Betway, pricing him at the odds of 8/11. This is quite a drop from the second favourite Gary ‘The Flying Scotsman’ Anderson’s 7/1. As the prices begin to drift outwards, it is worth noting that each-way bets pay at a third of the odds for the first two places, which basically means that we should be looking for the finalist who will inevitably meet with MVG in the USDM final.

With that in mind, Rob ‘Voltage’ Cross and Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright are priced at 7/1 and 9/1 respectively. Going further down the money line, you’ll find Mensur Suljovic available at 25/1, while Daryl Gurney can be backed at 33/1. James Wade (33/1), Michael Smith (33/1) and Adrian Lewis (40/1) are all worth considering, particularly Smith who impressed in this season’s Premier League. Raymond van Barneveld is another 40/1 shot, half the value of Dave Chisnall at 80’s. Simon Whitlock (100/1) and Gerwyn Price (125/1) make up the numbers in Sin City this year.

MVG Wins in Gibraltar

Michael van Gerwen lifted yet another trophy at the weekend, this time regaining the Gibraltar Darts Trophy. Beating a resurgent Adrian Lewis, the imperious Dutchman posted a 8-3 victory over the lesser spotted ‘Jackpot’ to give him his thirteenth title of 2018, a roll call that includes the Darts Masters, Premier League and the World Cup of Darts.

His tournament average was 104 — the best in the field — while during the final, a 108 average was enough to put an end to Lewis’ hopes of a much-needed victory. The twice former World Champion’s run to the final was the deepest he has gone in a European Tour event since winning the 2012 German Darts Masters and included some pretty tough fixtures.

He beat Gibraltar’s Clayton Otton 6-0 in Friday’s first round before seeing off Mensur Suljovic, James Wade and Peter Wright on his way to the latter stages of the competition where he beat Paul Nicholson to reach the final, his third final that goes towards yearly rankings. Interestingly, his improved form is being reflected in his odds of winning the World Championship for the third time. The Stoke-born chucker can now be backed at online bookmakers Betway for 50/1.

Betway’s evens favourite for the World championship, Mighty Mike, had it far easier, or maybe he just made it look that way. He made it to the final courtesy of wins against Vincent van der Voort, Andy Boulton, Jonny Clayton and Steve West.

Michael Smith, himself an Ally Pally 28/1 shot, was the defending champion in Gibraltar but the Premier League runner-up was beaten by Jermaine Wattimena as early as the second round. World Champion Rob Cross –- 9/2 to regain his own crown — continues his search for a first title of the year after a 6-5 quarter-final elimination at the hands of Steve West.
