Double Dutch Darts World Cup Title For Michael Van Gerwen And Barney

Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld led The Netherlands to their third World Cup of Darts title last weekend after they saw off the challenge from Welsh pair Gerwyn Price and Mark Webster in Sunday’s 3-1 final win in Frankfurt, Germany.

World Cup of Darts: how it happened

On route to the final the Dutch pair, second favourites to Scotland, faced the Czech Republic, USA and Germany before seeing off England’s pairing of Dave Chisnall and Adrian Lewis in the semi-finals.

Scots surprised

Scotland were shot out early in a massive shock loss to Singapore, a match that the Scottish pair Gary Anderson and Peter Wright were 1/20 to win; for a team made up out of two out of the world’s top three players, this was hugely disappointing for everyone except the bookmakers.

As top seeds, their 5-2 defeat at the hands of Paul Lim and Harith Lim provided the game with by far its biggest upset of the season so far.

Welsh dragon flies high

Beaten finalists Wales were the best-represented home nation having won against the Republic of Ireland in a first round 2-0 before repeating the score against both Russia in the quarter-finals and Belgium a round later in the semis.

Gerwyn Price, incidentally, will now take Adrian Lewis’ place in the World Series of Darts events in Shanghai and Las Vegas next month as “Jackpot” chooses to remain at home with his wife who is expecting a baby this summer.

Dutch dragon slayers

UK Open finalist Price, whose professional career is definitely on the rise, was crushed in the opening round against the Dutch as MVG ran out a 4-0 whitewash against the 32-year old Welshman.

Wales immediately drew back level though as Mark Webster beat Raymond van Barneveld 4-1 but from then on fell behind to an all-too-powerful Dutch display. Barney and Mike won the remaining legs to mark a 3-1 victory and crown themselves champions.

Upcoming darts: betting tips

Up next, there is the European Tour’s ninth leg which begins in Hamburg this Friday and for which there is a smattering of bets available.

All of said bets are with Bet365, as SkyBet and Betway chose to sit this one out.

It’s a quiet week and these odds are all outright winner prices, such as the 4/6 available on Michael van Gerwen and 7/2 for Peter “Snakebite” Wright.

The likes of Phil Taylor, Raymond van Barneveld and Gary Anderson will not be in attendance, meaning Dave Chisnall is next in the betting at 16/1 ahead of Adrian Lewis at 25/1 and James Wade who, at 33/1, is worth an outside each-way punt.

This Thursday at the Eissporthalle in Frankfurt, Germany, Scottish pair Gary ‘The Flying Scotsman’ Anderson and Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright will look to unseat the auld enemy, England, as world cup holders. The pair, ranked two and three in the world, will be looking to take down the £300,000, four-day tournament and see off competition from 33 other two-player nations, including some countries making their first appearance as the game’s global reach continues to grow.

For England, champions in four of the past five years, Adrian Lewis, who teamed up with Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor last year to lift the trophy for the English, has been dropped this time around due to poor form. Poor form is not a problem currently being experienced by his replacement Dave Chisnall, who has overseen a remarkable turnaround in performances recently. World number five, Chizzy recently moved above James Wade in the rankings following an unbeaten run in his last seven Premier League games.

Any side with world number one Michael van Gerwen in their ranks is to be feared especially one that also includes Raymond van Barneveld so look out for a strong Dutch showing here, winners twice before most recently in 2014.

Fourth seeds Wales will be represented by Gerwyn Price and Mark Webster just as they were last year, while Australia too, seeded fifth, will also be fielding their regular pair Simon Whitlock and Kyle Anderson. The same applies to Northern Ireland’s Daryl Gurney and Brendan Dolan as well as Belgian brothers Kim and Ronny Huybrechts, while Mensur Suljovic and Rowby-John Rodriguez will represent Austria, the last of the seeded nations.

For the first time ever Brazil will field a team at the World Cup of Darts as Alexandre Sattin and the London-based Diogo Portela lead out their team in Germany.

World Cup of Darts Betting Tips

The way the sportsbooks and betting odds have fallen look to suggest that only three nations have a realistic chance of winning the 2017 PDC World Cup of Darts. The first dart is thrown this Thursday, 1^st June, and will be shown live on Sky Sports 1HD.

Michael van Gerwen Wins Darts Premier League For Third Time

World number one Michael van Gerwen was crowned the winner of the Darts Premier League for the third time in five years.

The conclusion of an epic evening at The O2 Arena saw the brilliant Dutchman gifted a get out of jail free card by a generous Peter Wright.

Mighty Mike fought back from a 3-0 deficit and then a 7-2 deficit to steal an 11-10 victory over Wright, who once again dropped much-needed double shots – in this case a horribly frustrating six (six!) championship darts.

Heartbreak for Snakebite fans came in the 20th leg when Wright failed to land a double 16 before incredibly missing two more shots, then another three on his next visit.

Van Gerwen, who has now made the final of every Darts Premier League, is not the man you want to let back into a game. The Dutchman duly capitalised, taking full advantage and landing a double 10 before closing with a 12-darter to claim the £250,000 first prize.

Semi-final: Michael van Gerwen vs Gary Anderson

Earlier on Thursday, we also watched the semi-finals play out. The first match of the day allowed MVG to despatch the twice World Champion Gary Anderson 10-7 courtesy of a pivotal MVG break of throw late on in the match.

Anderson had taken the opener, and the game remained a tight, tense match until van Gerwen’s decisive snatch in the sixteenth leg.

Semi-final: Phil Taylor vs Peter Wright

Elsewhere, the Darts Premier League said goodbye to crowd favourite (and the greatest darts player of all time) Phil “The Power” Taylor as he gave way to Peter Wright.

Both The Power and the crowd had been hoping the six-time winner could claim a seventh before retirement but Wright wasn’t reading from the script and eliminated Taylor in a 10-9 victory.

Wright had romped into a 4-0 lead before Taylor showed his true class to bring the game level, preceding a break of throw that sent The Power into an amazing 9-8 lead and within touching distance of a final spot. Sadly, though, it wasn’t to be as Taylor missed a match-winning dart to allow Wright to take the final place.

Darts betting tips for Dubai Masters

Both MVG and Wright will turn out again this Wednesday in the Dubai Masters where the former is an outright winner’s price of 4/6 across the board – but for which Wright is an intriguing best price of 5/1 with SkyBet.

Phil Taylor will also be making an appearance in the Middle East this week. Bet365 are offering 14/1 on an outright win for The Power.

Dave Chisnall, who will make his World Cup debut for England next week, is an overall price of 22/1 in the same sportsbook, while James Wade can be selected for an outsider’s price of 33/1.

Anderson, for those interested, can be picked up for a Dubai tournament win for 11/2 at Betway where you will also find Raymond van Barneveld at 25/1.

Peter Wright takes on Dave Chsinall before MVG meets RVB in an all-Dutch clash.
