Who Will Win The BDO World Darts Championship 2017?

bdochamp1

The BDO World Darts Championship gets under way on January 7, running until January 15, at the Lakeside Country Club at Frimley Green, Surrey.

The Championships began in 1978 and has been staged at Lakeside since 1986. For years, it was the only world championship tournament; this changed in 1993 when the game split following the formation of the Professional Darts Organisation (PDC), where you’ll find Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor and Michael Van Gerwen.

While it has become the less prestigious code of the two, the BDO has an army of loyal fans for whom it remains the preferred tour, representing old school darts. For the record, the annual PDC World Championship takes place before the BDO version, beginning on December 15.

For the first time in 38 years, the BDO event will not be shown live on the BBC over the holiday season. Instead, you’ll find Glen ‘Duzza’ Durrant (above) and the like plying their trade on Channel 4 this year.

Darts betting tips for the BDO World Championship

Tournament favourite Durrant is 9/4 with SkyBet, Bet365 and Betway to become the overall event winner, following a bumper year in which he has scooped the BDO Gold Cup, British Classic and the Denmark Masters.

If rumours are anything to go by then, should Durrant win here, he is unlikely to defend his crown as a move to the PDC surely beckons; a move the player is apparently warm to.

Defending champion, England’s Scott Waites, who defeated Canadian Jeff Smith 7-1 in last year’s final, is a best price of 10/1 at Bet365 to repeat his success this coming January and become a three-time winner. Smith, on the other hand, has drifted as far as 22/1 with the same online bookmaker as well as Betway to go one place better and take down the whole event.

Second favourite, 25-year-old Dutchman Danny Noppert, another who will surely switch codes in the future, is a best price of 5/1 at SkyBet to claim his first major BDO tournament win.

Jamie Hughes, who fell at the semi-final stage a year ago, can be picked up for 10/1 at Bet365 and Betway, while Scott Mitchell is 14s with both of the same bookies, who are both offering a best price of 16/1 for Dean Reynolds to go all the way.

We’ll end the betting on the older statesman of the BDO tour, the legend that is Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams, who is ranked as 14/1 with both Bet365 and Betway and 12s at SkyBet. Adams, who sadly announced in September that he is being treated for prostate cancer, would be a popular champion having won at Lakeside in 2007, 2010 and 2011.

The sixty-year-old has been a fixture on the BDO circuit for years now and, for fans of this code, is regarded as a hero for his numerous rejections of PDC’s advances over the years and, coupled with his current troubles, would be an extremely popular winner here.

Phil Taylor And Michael Van Gerwen Into The Grand Slam Quarter Finals

The Grand Slam of Darts has provided a week of great darts entertainment leaving us with our final 8.

gsd

Despite losing 5-0 in what is possibly the shock result of the tournament so far, Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor is into the quarter-finals and will step back up to the oche tonight in the stand out match of the round against Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright.

It is the second of tonight’s two games, following a brilliant week at the Wolverhampton where almost everything has gone to plan for the big names, Adrian Lewis aside.

A win for Taylor here in game two will likely see him face MVG, who plays in tonight’s first game against Brendan Dolan which could in turn, lead to a thumping semi-final on Sunday.

In the second stream, whose matches play tomorrow, Gary Anderson will meet Barney first up after just about overcoming Danny Noppert, while James Wade will need to see off the challenge from Chris Dobey, who beat Jamie Hughes last night.

In a week that began with the world’s top players doing their own version of the Mannequin Challenge, the action has been brilliant, not least the 5-0 drubbing Phil Taylor suffered at the hands of Darren Webster, even if The Power had already qualified by then.

Unfortunately, the table topper bet I placed last week didn’t hold up, even though I opted for Raymond Van Barneveld over Mensur Suljovic to top Group F, which he did. Indeed, Michael Van Gerwen, Robert Thornton, Peter Wright, Phil Taylor, Gary Anderson, Raymond van Barneveld and James Wade all won their groups as they were expected to. Then, the round robin stage’s last group, Adrian Lewis incredibly came bottom, winning no matches and shooting down mine and everyone else’s otherwise decent bet. Thanks Jackpot!

Robert Thornton was gone by the second round, however, as he met MVG straight out of the groups and was promptly dismissed 10-5. James Wade who topped his group, which included Dave Chisnall, swiftly saw off Benito van de Pas 2-10 while in the last tie of round 2 Raymond van Barneveld dispatched the last remaining BDO representative Glen Durrant 10-7.

Darts Betting Tips

MVG is first out tonight and it really shouldn’t take him too long to move Brendan Dolan aside who is 14/1 at Bet365 just to come through this evening’s match. It’s game two that should provide the best action of the night as Peter Wright and Phil Taylor face off for the right to play, in all likeliness, Van Gerwen on Sunday. Taylor is odds on across the board, while Wright can be picked up at 7/4 for a win tonight, which I am toying with.

Both Bet365 and Betway are laying odds of 7/1 for The Power to take the crown and there is every possibility that the overall winner will come from his predicted semi-final face off on Sunday. The second batch of matches, to be played on Saturday, sees both James Wade and Gary Anderson odds on to emerge from their respective games and meet up in the second of Sunday’s semis. For the outright winner, I’m sticking with Anderson, MVG aside, and the Scotsman is 4/1 in all of our partner rooms.

Van Gerwen Cleans Up In Glasgow Ahead Of Grand Slam Defence

Another week, another title for Michael Van Gerwen as his impressive 2016 form continued with yet another tournament win, this time in the World Series. Yep, last Sunday at Glasgow’s Braehead Arena, the Dutch master took down his 23rd tournament victory of the year as he retained the World Series of Darts.

mvg

MVG took on Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright in a repeat of the 2015 final where the Dutchman won 11-10, this time winning 11-9 and claiming the £30,000 first prize. It was a tight affair, however, as Wright, who had defeated Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor in the previous rounds, saved his best for his home crowd, taking an early 4-3 advantage. The lead didn’t last long though, as Van Gerwen claimed seven out of the next nine legs, putting himself 10-8 ahead.

Surprisingly, MVG then stuttered and allowed Wright to get back into a match which had already seen the lead change hands three times. While Wright brought himself level for what would have been his first ever championship title, Mighty Mike dug deep, like the best champions always do, and closed out the match with his ninth 180 before sealing the win on a magnificent double two.

For the Dutch master, this meant his third successive televised title following back to back wins in the World Grand Prix and European Championship. He will be looking to add a fourth this weekend when the Grand Slam of Darts rolls into the Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

Grand Slam of Darts 2016 schedule

Running for nine days from November 12 until November 20, the Grand Slam of Darts is a unique event that recruits 32 players from both the PDC and the BDO. The PDC players qualify through their annual performance in televised events which has led to the inclusion of the following ten stars; Michael Van Gerwen, Phil Taylor, Gary Anderson, Adrian Lewis, Peter Wright, Dave Chisnall, Raymond Van Barneveld, Mensur Suljovic, Max Hopp and Nathan Aspinall.

These are all joined by former Grand Slam finalist James Wade as well as Alan Norris, Benito Van de Pas, Ian White, Simon Whitlock and Gerwyn Price. Then, places are allotted to those players on the BDO circuit that won their qualification through a special PDC Qualifier in Barnsley last month. From there, we have the following players; reigning Lakeside Champion Scott Waites, Robert Thornton, Brendan Dolan, Darren Webster, James Wilson, Dimitri Van den Bergh, Chris Dobey, Nathan Derry and Ted Evetts.

Other BDO competitors will include Scott Mitchell, Darryl Fitton, Jamie Hughes, Glen Durrant, Jeff Smith, Danny Noppert and Martin Adams who faces a daunting first match against Michael Van Gerwen.

The opening four days splits the players up into eight groups for a round-robin style opening round where players will score two points for a win and the top two from each group will progress to the knockout stage from the last 16 onwards.

The full draw, groups and schedule have now been drawn up so we can begin to take a look at where the value lies.

Grand Slam of Darts betting tips

It goes without saying that Michael Van Gerwen is the favourite, at 5/6, to defend his Grand Slam of Darts title so let’s leave this one there. Six-time Grand Slam winner Phil Taylor is a tempting 6/1 with Betway while my pick, Gary Anderson, is 7/1 with the same bookmaker.

For the opening day, SkyBet are running an enhanced accumulator on Saturday big shots Phil Taylor, Gary Anderson, Michael Van Gerwen & Adrian Lewis all to win for 11/8. Or, there is the following sweetener based on the afternoon session: James Wade, Peter Wright, Mensur Suljovic, Raymond Van Barneveld & Dave Chisnall all to win at 100/30. Providing you can choose between Suljovic and Van Barneveld, both evens, simply picking the group winners from the favourites will pay around £78 a line at Betway .

With MVG in this kind of form, it really is worth looking at each way bets. We proved this last week when we plumped for Peter Wright at 25/1, who paid out at half the odds for a second place finish. Bear this in mind with Adrian Lewis available at a 22/1 with Bet365 and Peter Wright at 20/1 across the rooms.

Oh, and from the BDO camp, Glen Durrant at 50/1 is the shortest price and can be taken at SkyBet, Bet365 and Betway should you feel an upset is on the cards.
