Michael van Gerwen made it three night wins in three following a 6-4 success against world number one Michael Smith on Night Six in Liverpool. Mighty Mike continued to show his dominance in this year’s Premier League Darts as he become the first player to win three successive nights since the format was introduced last year.

The Dutchman came into Thursday fresh off back-to-back victories in Dublin and Exeter and now has a Darts Premier League win in Liverpool to celebrate. The Green Machine kicked off his campaign at the M&S Bank Arena by thumping Jonny Clayton 6-2 before beating Peter Wright 6-1 to set up a final showdown against Smith.
The first two legs went with throw before van Gerwen made the breakthrough as he punished three missed darts at the double from the St Helens star to break in leg three. MVG then extended his lead with a 14-dart leg, but the Bully Boy quickly burst back into life, converting a clinical 111 combo to claw things back. He then followed that up with two 180 visits in the sixth leg.
Smith may have been unable to conjure up another magical nine-darter against van Gerwen but he did manage to level the tie with a 12-darter and continued his good run with an 11-dart hold in the following leg. That was the end of things for Smith though, who had been struggling with illness ahead of Thursday night’s action. Mighty Mike restored his lead in the next leg with a 14-dart break, before finishing the job on double ten, after Bully Boy had wired a dart at the bull.
Earlier on in the night, Smith had notched up wins over Dimitri Van den Bergh and Nathan Aspinall to claim a decent three points on Merseyside. The world champion produced 110 and 122 finishes in his 6-3 win over van den Bergh before lashing in five 180s to dispatch Aspinall setting up his meeting with van Gerwen.
In the quarter-finals, Aspinall inflicted defeat on Night One winner Chris Dobey, while in the evening’s curtain-raiser, Peter Wright finally opened up his Premier League account in 2023, getting scores on the board after dramatically scraping through his match against Gerwyn Price.
Winning 6-5, Snakebite missed eight match darts having raced into a 5-2 lead in a race to six against the Welshman. Price then responded to restore parity and bring the match back to five apiece. The Iceman though was unable to complete the comeback and missed three match darts of his own in the deciding leg.
What can expect from Night Seven in Nottingham?
Dimitri Van den Bergh v Nathan Aspinall
This has the potential to be a close encounter. Dimitri van den Bergh and Nathan Aspinall occupy third and fifth places in the league table respectively and meet in what will serve as the opening game in Thursday’s action.
The Dream Maker’s highest finish so far came on Night Three in Glasgow when he made the final having beaten Aspinall 6-1 in one of that night’s semi-final matches. The Belgian has only made the last four once since then so will be keen to get this week’s action off with a win.
The Asp has only made it to one final out of six so far, where he lost out to Gerwyn Price on Night Two in Cardiff. However, he is picking up points on a regular basis and has managed to reach the semis in each of the last two Darts Premier League nightly tournaments.
Despite this being a tough one to call, it is worth noting that it is van den Bergh that has by far the better head-to-head record between these two, winning all nine of their last meetings. That is something that The Asp will need to overcome if he is to make a third successive semi-final.
Aspinall is considered to be the slight outsider but is arguably in better form although van den Bergh does seem to have the Englishman’s number.
Jonny Clayton v Gerwyn Price
The second match of the night is an all-Welsh affair as Jonny Clayton walks out against Gerwyn Price. Price has only tasted success in one of the six Premier League nights so far. That came on Night Two and he has only made it past the first round once since then.
The Iceman will fancy his chances against The Ferret in this Thursday’s quarters having beaten him both times in their previous two meetings this calendar year. Not many hang in there quite like Jonny Clayton, however, and he will definitely put up a good fight.
Clayton, who only turned full-time professional last year, has reached the semi-finals in four previous nights before his last four elimination at the hands of Michael van Gerwen a week ago. Both players need to be doing better than they currently are although Price is currently in the play off places. Incredibly, former world champion Price has never reached the playoffs so will want to add to his tally in order to get that monkey off his back.
Price is yet to really click into gear so far this season and has been the very model of inconsistency in the Premier League. In his ten matches so far, he has twice averaged over a one hundred and three times averaged in the eighties.
There are signs that the crowd might be softening on The Iceman and it’s telling that his only decent night’s work came in Cardiff. Last week in Liverpool the crowd gave him an easier ride than he is used to – in England at least – and he made it to match darts so how the Nottingham crowd react could sway things either way. However, this could be a good opportunity for The Ferret, who is topping the averages on the Pro Tour this season, to pick up his first victory over The Iceman this year.
Peter Wright v Michael van Gerwen
What is arguably the tie of the round pits runaway Premier League leader Michael van Gerwen against bottom-of-the-table Peter Wright. Snakebite has only won one match in six weeks of Premier League action and only picked up his first points last week.
Even then, he had to survive three missed match darts from Gerwyn Price so could very easily still be pointless. Whatever happens this week at the Motorpoint Arena, Wright will still be in the bottom four.
Unfortunately, last week in Liverpool he then progressed to meet this week’s opponent MVG who made mincemeat of Wright, dishing out a real 6-1 thrashing. Snakebite isn’t happy with his darts right now and he isn’t playing at weekends. On the face of it this should make him fresher but arguably less competitive.
It looks like a formidable task for the Scotsman to pick up his second DPL win of the tour in Nottingham this week and he starts Thursday’s match as the obvious underdog. Mighty Mike continues to go from strength to strength and has won the last three nights on the spin and is now eight points clear.
It is difficult to look past van Gerwen for this one. It really is a top vs bottom clash in terms of form, and possibly the real question could be how much the Dutchman wins this by. Another thrashing could well be on the cards.
Chris Dobey v Michael Smith
Chris Dobey hasn’t won a Premier League Darts match since his dream opening night triumph but for the second week in a row, there were more than enough positive signs to suggest a change of fortunes could be right around the corner.
Hollywood averaged 104 in a 6-3 defeat to Dimitri van den Bergh two weeks ago and he exceeded three figures once again during last week’s clash with Nathan Aspinall in Liverpool, where he missed a dart at a double which would have forced a deciding leg. In fact, his Darts Premier League average of 97.37 is second only to Michael van Gerwen while he also boasts the highest 180-per-leg ratio at 0.32.
UK Masters champion Dobey will hold no fears about facing Michael Smith after he beat him 11-7 in the semi-finals of that competition. However, The Bully Boy consolidated second place in the Premier League table last week by reaching the final.
Smith also fired in 11 180s in his last two matches against Liverpool so there should plenty of maximums on the cards in Nottingham. While I’ve no doubt that Dobey will be picking up more points soon, I think this match has come too soon and expect the Bully Boy to progress to another semi-final and set up yet another meeting with Michael van Gerwen.
