The betting favourite to win the Darts Premier League outright, Michael van Gerwen became the fourth different night winner in as many weeks after he took down the Night Four title in Dublin last Thursday at the 3 Arena.
The Dutchman’s victory came about as Night Two winner Gerwyn Price missed seven match darts in the final. The Welshman had looked well on course to take all five points for the second time this season when he stormed into a 5-2 lead but was left on 45 and 56 in the following two legs as Mighty Mike held his nerve to take advantage and keep a thrilling contest alive.

The Green Machine then punished The Iceman for missing two attempts at double 15 in the 10th leg to force a deciding leg in which they both combined to waste seven match darts before the Dutchman finally pinned his on his third attempt.
The result sees reigning Premier League champion MVG climb to the top of the Darts Premier League table on 10 points, one ahead of Michael Smith on nine and two ahead of Gerwyn Price who is on eight. Michael van Gerwen began Thursday night’s action with a 6-3 dismissal of Chris Dobey before moving on to winning by the same scoreline against Jonny Clayton in the last four.
Gerwyn Price had been hoping to win his second Premier League night of 2023 following his Night Two success in his home town of Cardiff, and he continued his decent start to this year’s competition to claim three points.
The 2021 World Champion produced a fantastic display to overcome Night Three runner up Dimitri Van den Bergh in their quarter final clash, averaging 104 and landing five 180s to secure a 6-4 win. The Iceman then moved on to post another ton plus average in his semi final demolition of Night Three winner Michael Smith, averaging 102 to win 6-1 against the World Champion.
Earlier on in the evening, Smith had come back from being 4-2 down to keep Peter Wright’s winless run in this year’s competition going, while Nathan Aspinall was Dublin’s other quarter final loser, after he was shot down 6-4 by Jonny Clayton.
Michael van Gerwen v Gerwyn Price
This week’s action kicks off where last week’s action closed, with MVG versus Gerwyn Price in a repeat of the final in Dublin. Despite the Dutchman eventually coming out on top, Price was arguably the star of the night in the Irish capital and had been more careful on his finishing he would have been the first two time nightly winner this season.
However, it was The Green Machine who banked the win, the points and the maximum prize money to go to the very summit of the DPL table. Winning six matches so far this season, the Dutchman has put together a leg differential of +11 following his Night Four triumph last time out.
Mighty Mike, who boasts the highest average in the tournament so far, just edged past The Iceman last week when averaging 94.40 compared to Price’s 91.94 and it wouldn’t surprise to see something similar in Exeter. MVG’s victory, however, was largely down to Price’s missed doubles and the Welshman really should have won a week ago.
Sporting a green jersey, Price finally seems to be winning crowds over but this week sees the Premier League roadshow roll into England for the first time this season so expect the Arena to ring out in a chorus of boos once again. I hope not, but fear this will be the case and how Price responds to this will be critical. For that reason, Michael van Gerwen to win kicks off this week’s quarter final acca.
Nathan Aspinall v Michael Smith
Next up is Nathan Aspinall versus Michael Smith, with The Bully Boy aiming to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League Darts table. Smith beat Peter Wright last week before losing 6-1 to Gerwyn Price in the last four, missing out on a final match against van Gerwen.
The world number one from St Helens will be desperate to show a reaction to that drubbing where his highest checkout was just 41. Aspinall, who is still looking for his first night win, lost 6-4 to Jonny Clayton a week ago and has since dropped down to fourth in the table.
The Asp is more than capable of springing a surprise here but I am expecting him to struggle against Smith so I will be backing The Bully Boy to win and take on Michael van Gerwen in the semis.
Dimitri Van den Bergh v Chris Dobey
The third match of Night Five sees world number 11 Dimitri van den Bergh take on world number 21 Chris Dobey in a Belgium versus England clash. Both of these players have managed to win three games and they’re level on five points each although Dobey is one of our four players to win a night so far in the Premier League Darts.
Both men were eliminated in the quarter-finals last week in Dublin, with Gerwyn Price beating van den Bergh and Dobey losing against night winner Michael van Gerwen. This is a tough one to call but I’m leaning towards Hollywood Chris Dobey, but it might be worth looking into the 180s markets as well as van den Bergh has hit the second most out of the field after Michael van Gerwen’s 26.
Jonny Clayton v Peter Wright
Last up we have Jonny Clayton versus Peter Wright in a match that pitches second bottom against the very bottom. This year’s Premier League of darts really hasn’t gone to plan for Snakebite Peter Wright who is still searching for his first game win and his leg difference in the table reads -9.
On the other hand, Clayton has now at least won a couple of games and has claimed four points in the process. The Ferret beat Aspinall 6-4 last week before running into Michael van Gerwen in the semi finals. I think this one will go to the Welshman but it is also worth backing the under 5.5 maximums as these two are also the bottom two for 180s made in Premier League of Darts and that trend is unlikely to be broken this week in Exeter.
