Another Fright Night For Wright As Bully Boy Dishes Out A Beating

Peter Wright pays ytribute to Jim Bowen

Not even the colourful tribute to the late, great Jim Bowen who died last Wednesday could stop Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright from suffering yet another nightmare at the oche, this time in Nottingham. In honour of the great man, Wright sported an image of the 1980’s TV show Bullseye’s mascot “Bully,” but it was another Bully, Michael Smith, who shot him down by seven legs to one. Only one week earlier, Wright lost to Mensur Suljovic by the same score line. On Sunday, Wright was beaten 6-1 by Brendan Dolan in the Players Championship, making for very poor form for the world number two.

Smith was on the rebound of his own defeat a week ago, albeit his only loss in the league so far, which was at the hands of world champion Rob Cross. This time, Smith averaged 95 and landed seven of his 13 double attempts to give Wright’s his second successive thumping in as many weeks.

In match two, Daryl Gurney and Simon Whitlock each took home a share of the points following a 6-6 draw. Gurney is still without a victory in his first ever Premier League campaign and needed to survive four match darts from The Wizard in the deciding leg in order to save the tie. Earlier, Superchin had come from a leg down to lead 3-1 before Whitlock moved back ahead after winning the seventh leg courtesy of a 133 checkout. However, four misses in the final leg allowed Gurney back in and he duly took advantage of Whitlock’s generosity by landing a double eight to split the points.

This match was followed by Rob Cross and Mensur Suljovic with Voltage proving too powerful for The Big Gentle. His superiority was apparent in the 7-2 victory that brought his winning streak to four on the spin and moves him up to third in the table. Cross also posted his highest Premier League average so far — 106.49 — while hitting three 180s and delivering seven from nine darts at the doubles. Suljovic, who destroyed Snakebite 7-1 in Leeds, managed four darts at a double himself. But it was not enough to take home any points this week.

Michael van Gerwen keeps his place at the top of the Premier League Darts table following his 7-3 win over Gerwyn Price who remains winless. MVG required that exact score line to stay above Smith in the table following his earlier mauling of Wright, achieving it with the help of the rather tidy average of 104.8 along with a checkout percentage of 58.33%. The match was evenly split after four legs, but a 152-checkout put Mighty Mike ahead before finishes of 95, 71 and 117, plus an 11-darter, settled the tie.

The night’s final match saw Gary Anderson come from behind to earn his third league draw of the season, this time against Raymond van Barneveld. It was yet another match in which The Flying Scotsman was required to dig deep and come from behind to claim his points having previously produced comebacks against Peter Wright and Daryl Gurney. This time Barney led by six legs to four, but in shooting for the win, missed five match darts that gifted Anderson a lifeline. It was a lifeline the Scotsman gratefully accepted by taking out a 144 checkout and saving a point.

Premier League Darts betting tips

Matchday Eight will take place today, the 22nd, at The SSE Hydro in Glasgow with televised coverage available on Sky Sports Action HD and Sky Sports Main Event HD from 19.00 GMT.

Daryl Gurney and Mensur Suljovic kick things off this week with little to split the pair. Both players sit just above the drop zone on four points meaning we only have recent form to go on. What this means that, assuming the match doesn’t head for a tie, Mensur will have the slight upper hand.

His form of late has been good, and out of these two, should feel unlucky not to have more points on the board right now. Daryl is also playing well but is dropping far too many doubles making the Big Gentle the easier bet.

Michael van Gerwen and Michael Smith are next out in a battle of the top two. Smith has been massively impressive in his league campaign so far and is certainly capable of causing a shock here, making this one of those rare weeks where MVG isn’t a guaranteed win. That said, I can’t see Bully Boy beating the Dutchman when all is said and done. As good a campaign as Smith is having, Mighty Mike is simply a class apart from the rest. Given this tie presents him with the opportunity to go clear at the top, he has an added incentive to win, making him even harder to stop than normal. As always, backing MVG is pointless, but we like van Gerwen to win by over 2.5 legs, hit a 100+ checkout and average over 100 which pays 5/2.

Match three sees Gary Anderson take on Simon Whitlock with The Flying Scotsman trailing back in sixth place with only five points collected so far, which is hardly fitting for a two-time world champion and current world number three. His tally sees him two points behind the fourth-spot, which is currently occupied by this week’s opponent The Wizard. The only way these two can switch places is for Anderson to record a win so big that he goes above his rival on leg difference. While I don’t think that will happen I do expect the Scotsman to win, albeit by a much closer margin.

If Gary Anderson can feel worried about his position, that’s nothing compared to the spectacular break down in form suffered by his countryman Peter Wright, who after being beaten 7-1 twice in a row sits in the relegation zone, one spot off the bottom. Hardly fitting for the world number two. Tonight’s opponent Raymond van Barneveld is ahead in the table and in a much better position mentally. Barney is seeing how far his game can take him this year, coming across pretty relaxed and enjoying his darts overall, unlike Snakebite whose head seems to be getting the better of him. For this reason alone, I’m backing Barney this week. Why not try van Barneveld to win, hit the most 180s and average under 100, worth 9/2 at Betway?

We end the night with Rob Cross versus Gerwyn Price in a match that really should be going Cross’ way. His form is better and so is his mentality right now. Price sits at the very bottom of the table with Betway laying as short as 1/8 for him to miss the cut. While it’s true that he deserves more than the two points he has, it also says something about his game right now that he hasn’t collected more. I can’t really see any other result than Rob winning this one. At Betway, Cross to win, hit the most 180s and Price to average under 95 pays at 3/1.

This week’s boosted treble from Betway sees one line on van Gerwen, van Barneveld and Cross, up from 3/1 to 4/1. Or, our line (Suljovic, MVG, Anderson, RVB and Cross) adds up to 13/1 at Betway.

  • (6/4) Daryl Gurney v Mensur Suljovic (5/4)
  • (3/10) Michael van Gerwen v Michael Smith (6/1)
  • (4/9) Gary Anderson v Simon Whitlock (5/1)
  • (6/4) Peter Wright v Raymond van Barneveld (5/4)
  • (4/11) Rob Cross v Gerwyn Price (11/2)

Peter Wright Upsets MVG in Premier League Victory

In another week of unpredictable upsets in the Darts Premier League, Peter Wright had one of those nights we all know he is capable of but seldom produces as he went on to shock Michael van Gerwen 7-5. Elsewhere, Rob Cross lost again, this time in a 7-1 thrashing by Simon Whitlock who, following back-to-back wins and a 100% record, now sits atop of the League after two weeks.

Snakebite could only manage an unconvincing draw with Gerwyn Price last week, but his outlook quickly improved early in the fourth leg as the pre-match 6/1 underdog maneuvered himself into a 3-1 lead before MVG raised his game enough to level the match. Wright though soon quashed his opponent’s rebellion, punishing the Dutchman for three missed darts at the double and taking out a 116 to move back into the lead. Before long he found himself within one leg of guaranteeing at least a point and victory within reach. Soon after, Wright landed his third maximum of the match on his way to a 12-darter, followed swiftly by a 13-darter.

Things are currently far less smooth for Rob Cross, however, as he suffered a second successive heavy defeat. This time his loss was at the hands of current League leader Simon Whitlock who battered the World champion 7-1 at the Motopoint Arena. Whitlock, by the way, this week fired out a warning on Twitter that the Instagram account swhitlock180 is fraudulent and in no way affiliated to the Aussie professional. So there.

Back to the oche where 27-year-old Cross has now lost his last six matches, with his only win since January 1st coming at the Masters first round against Ian White. Despite his current downswing, Voltage was the odds-on favourite pre-match but instead it was the Wizard who conjured up another win.

There were no such issues for Gary Anderson who comfortably won his grudge match against the Welsh crowd’s favourite Gerwyn Price, whose scoring simply let him down while Anderson produced his best performance of the season so far to win 7-3. Price did manage to bank an average of 92.71 but only chucked off eight shots at double whereas Anderson posted an average of 99.22.

Raymond van Barneveld scored his first win of the season with a 7-5 victory over Mensur Suljovic in a much tighter affair where both players averaged over 100. The game hinged on Suljovic missing three attempts at the double in the fourth leg leaving the door ajar for Barney to sneak in and land a 167 checkout to move 3-1 up, a lead that widened a leg later. From there, the remaining legs were shared equally leaving the Barney to take all three points.

The League’s only other 100% record was held on to after Michael Smith recorded a 7-4 victory over Daryl Gurney in the night’s opening match. Bully Boy stormed into a 3-0 lead, with the help of a 124 checkout. Numerous 13-darters and 14-darters were to follow before a fourth 180 of the match put Smith ahead 5-4. Smith capitalised on his rival’s four missed double attempts to go 6-4 up before nailing the final leg too.

Results from last week

  • Michael Smith 7-4 Daryl Gurney
  • Rob Cross 1-7 Simon Whitlock
  • Michael van Gerwen 5-7 Peter Wright
  • Gerwyn Price 3-7 Gary Anderson
  • Raymond van Barneveld 7-5 Mensur Suljovic

Darts Premier League Betting Tips: Matchday Three

This week’s action sees our heroes head to the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle – catch the action live on Sky Sports Main Event HD and/or Sky Sports Action HD from 19:00 (GMT) – for week three.

The first game of the night features Mensur Suljovic and Michael Smith with the former currently on a great roll sharing the top of the table with a 100% win rate. In contrast, Suljovic is in the opposite situation, although it was Mensur that beat Smith in the Masters only a matter of weeks ago, making this something of a cloudy bet. That said, we’re putting our money on the Englishman at 11/8.

This match is followed by the Daryl Gurney and Gerwyn Price contest in which we’re siding with Gurney despite both players slightly under-performing at the moment. The reckoning here is that Gurney is showing the better form of the two right now. Again, Price should be more than comfortable against Superchin and actually beat him at the Masters, but I’m backing the Northern Irishman to emerge victorious this time around.

Hands up, Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright caught me off guard last week. I was not alone in expecting World number one Michael van Gerwen to do what he so often does and wipe the floor with his opponent. Yet, it was the Scotsman who won on the day. He now meets up with another player to have beaten MVG at the oche, Rob Cross, who has barely won since. On that note, we could back a draw now, but given that I simply don’t have faith in Rob Cross on the Premier League stage right now, I’m selecting Snakebite to march on in the Premier League with another win.

Thursday’s match number four is a whopper as the world’s number one and two collide when Gary Anderson meets Michael van Gerwen. Mighty Mike was defeated last time out but won’t lose twice in a row so he can be safely expected to bounce back and win this week. This is even more likely given the grief Anderson keeps getting from his bad back which might continue to plague him again. Yes, Peter Wright managed the task last week but whether or not Gary is up to it yet is another matter.

Finally, league leader Simon Whitlock meets the legend that is Raymond van Barneveld. Barney is looking good on three points so far, and he’ll be aiming to leapfrog his opponent at the top of the table with a win. This is providing that Michael Smith loses the night’s opener against Mensur Suljovic. That, for me is more than enough encouragement to pick Barney on Thursday night.

Try this 6/1 Betway boosted treble of Peter Wright, Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld all to win.

Or if you are a bit more daring, try Michael Smith, Daryl Gurney, Peter Wright, Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld, which is worth over 28 to the pound, again at Betway.

Matchups for Week 3

  • (11/8) Mensur Suljovic v Michael Smith (11/8)
  • (5/6) Daryl Gurney v Gerwyn Price (12/5)
  • (13/10) Peter Wright v Rob Cross (6/4)
  • (7/2) Gary Anderson v Michael van Gerwen (4/7)
  • (5/2) Simon Whitlock v Raymond van Barneveld (4/5)

World Darts Championships Continue Into Week 3

Peter Wright PDC World Championship

The 25th PDC World Darts Championship continues today with the last few remaining second round matches before the start of the third-round matches following a quick break for the Christmas holidays.

There are six matches in total today, played across two sessions in the afternoon and later on in the evening. For fans, Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright, Michael ‘Mighty Mike’ van Gerwen and Raymond ‘Barney’ van Barneveld are all in action tonight.

So far this Championships, we have seen James Richardson, who goes again this afternoon, take care of Kim Huybrechts in a shock whitewash win, Vincent van der Voort overcome Dave Chisnall and one of the biggest upsets ever as Kevin Munch — ranked outside the world’s top 300 — beat Adrian Lewis.

A look ahead

For today, first up is Simon Whitlock and Darren Webster. Australian Whitlock is looking to put last week behind him when his game was hampered by a touch of winter illness, leaving him averaging a less than impressive 87 and missing 28 doubles against Martin Schindler. Webster, who plays 24-hours later, wasn’t much better but he did destroy Whitlock on this very stage 12 months ago and could well come out on top again tonight.

Alan Norris steps out in the second match of the afternoon with James Richardson providing the opposition. ‘Chuck’ Norris won easily ten days ago against Kim Viljanen and should emerge the better man tonight against Richardson who has been playing very well, but looks unlikely to match previous heights this afternoon.

This match is followed by Kevin Munch and Toni Alcinas. German Munch has already provided the shock of the tournament by coming from two sets down against twice World Champion Adrian ‘Jackpot’ Lewis to win and will fancy his chances again tonight.

Crowd favourite Peter Wright is out next against Jamie Lewis with the second seed clearly still not operating at full power during his win over Diogo Portela after suffering with gallstones in early December. Surely though, as another week has passed, his recuperation improves and he should have enough in the tank to get him through to the later stages here.

The second evening session match and first battle of the third round is an all Dutch affair as Vincent van der Voort takes on Raymond van Barneveld and could provide the biggest darts betting shock of the night. Former winner here ‘Barney’ is obviously the favourite but this one couldn’t be closer to call. Vincent van der Voort is playing some of the best darts of his life and has already dumped out Dave Chisnall and Steve Beaton. I’d still side with ‘Barney’ but pay attention closely.

MVG is out next, fresh from a 4-0 destruction of James Wilson, in which he won every leg. Good as he is, Mighty Mike’s opponent Gerwyn Price will have to perform at his very, very best to even claim a set. Expect another showcase performance from the tourney favourite.
