So far, the two to beat, performance wise at least, have been Gerwyn ‘The Iceman’ Price and Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright, the latter of who absolutely destroyed world number two Rob Cross on Wednesday evening. The Iceman, on the other hand, won all his group games before making light work of Darren Webster on Thursday as he looks to defend his title.

A look ahead to this weekend’s action

Tonight’s action gets underway at 19.15 on Sky Sports Action when Dave Chisnall steps out against Peter Wright. Both players enjoyed dominant victories in their second round matches and both are looking like something close to their best. Ryan Harrington was Chizzy’s 10-3 victim, the same score line that Snakebite inflicted on Rob Cross.

Seemingly settling down on one set of arrows, Wright wasn’t required to play at his best level to beat Voltage, who faded as the match went on, which is good news for Snakebite’s energy levels. Wright goes into tonight’s match the favourite at 8/11 with Betway, but as well as he’s playing right now, Chizzy’s 11/10 is tempting, especially given Snakebite’s knack of screwing things up for himself.

These two are followed up to the oche by a game that could become a grudge match as there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of love lost between Michael Smith and Glen Durrant for their quarter-final showdown. Their feud stems from Smith’s outspoken views on whether or not Duzza should be competing for the BDO when he has been a PDC man for the past eleven months.

One week ago, in the first round, the pair met with Bully Boy running out the 5-3 winner. Now, they meet again with neither player looking their best in midweek wins over Daryl Gurney and Gabriel Clemens. Smith, the world number three, has yet to win a major title and with each passing tournament there is greater expectation on him to end his drought. Having won once already, there would be little-to-no reason to abandon Smith at this point though. He is 8/11 to win tonight’s match, while Duzza can be backed at 11/10.

Tomorrow, Gerwyn Price takes on Gary Anderson in another grudge match after these two famously fell out in last year’s final, a final that The Iceman won. He’s looking good again and few would back against him here, especially following his 10-1 defeat of Darren Webster.

Anderson, on the other hand, looked to be struggling in his 10-8 comeback victory over Robert Thornton, requiring six match darts before finally stumbling home. The Iceman is 4/6 against The Flying Scotsman’s 6/5 and with good reason.

Michael van Gerwen goes in the last match of the round as the three-times world champion takes on a two times world champion Adrian Lewis. It very nearly wasn’t though as MVG had to fight back to claim this victory after falling behind against Ian ‘Diamond’ White on Thursday night.

Diamond, who had never made it past the quarter finals of a televised event, couldn’t even reach the quarters. This was after soaring ahead but letting himself down on the doubles, missing 22 in total, allowing the best in the world back into the match to win 10-7.

His opponent is former world champion Adrian ‘Jackpot’ Lewis, who came from behind at 9-6 to beat James Wade 10-9. It was hard on Wade who at one point had a 9-6 lead and was firmly in charge of the match.

The Machine missed his bull shot for the match, which let Jackpot back in to win 10-9 and reach his first major TV quarter final since 2017. Mighty Mike is 1/9 to win the match, which is pretty steep but any money spent on Lewis’ 11/2 would still feel wasted.

Outright betting at Betway is as follows; MVG is the odds-on favourite at 4/5, Gerwyn Price 7/1, Peter Wright 7/1, Dave Chisnall 9/1, Michael Smith 9/1, Gary Anderson 10/1, Glen Durrant 14/1 and Adrian Lewis 40/1.

  • Dave Chisnall V Peter Wright
  • Michael Smith V Glen Durrant

Saturday November 16 (7pm)

  • Michael Smith V Glen Durrant
  • Michael van Gerwen V Adrian Lewis

Gerwyn Price International Darts Open

The Welsh Iceman, Gerwyn Price has successfully defended his International Darts Open title in Riesa, Germany. Twelve months ago, the former Rugby player overcame Simon ‘The Wizard’ Whitlock to claim his maiden European Tour victory, a feat he has now repeated, this time at the expense of Rob Cross.

Voltage, the World Matchplay champion, was vanquished 8-6 in a closely-fought final where he averaged 90 to Price’s 93. Cross was hunting what would have been the maiden European Tour title of his career. He had initially opened up a 4-2 advantage after checking out from 148. Instantly though, Price hit back with a 121 to complete a 12-darter. Before long, Price finished the job in style with a 108 checkout. Pinning two 180s each, neither player was in great finishing form. Voltage failed in 10 of his 16 double attempts, while The Iceman misguided eight from 21.

Other action from International Darts Open

34-year-old Price’s route to the final saw him take on and dismiss Joe Murnan as well as UK Open winner Nathan Aspinall, both by 6-4 score lines. In the last four he met with Glen Durrant, who was also sent packing, this time in a 7-3 win.

As for Voltage, he thrashed last week’s European Tour winner Joe Cullen 6-0 in the third round before moving on to Richard North, who was dealt with equally brutally, 6-1. Things were a little less comfortable in the semi-finals where a 7-6 score line was enough to move into the final at the expense of Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright.

Price now has a total of seven PDC crowns to his name which includes the Grand Slam of Darts as well as two Players Championship titles. He can now look forward to the final few months of the year in which, following the European Tour event number 13, the Gibraltar Darts Trophy, the Champions League of Darts, European Championship, World Series of Darts Finals, Grand Slam of Darts, Players Championship Finals and the World Championship all take place.

2019 Champions League Of Darts

The draw for this year’s Champions League of Darts, which pits the world’s top eight players against each other over two days, has now been made. The event starts on October 19 and takes place at the Morningside Arena in Leicester. The reigning champion here is Gary Anderson, who will open up his defense against Michael ‘Bully Boy’ Smith.

The BBC-televised tournament works by splitting the participants up into two groups of four for a round-robin phase which is held over the opening three sessions of play. This is followed by the top two from each group competing in the semi-finals and final.

With only the world’s best eight competing, there are no easy games, but all the same Group A looks like a particularly frightening prospect. Gary ‘The Flying Scotsman’ Anderson has been handed the same group as World Champion Michael van Gerwen, World Championship finalist Michael Smith and reigning European Champion James Wade.

Former World Grand Prix winner Daryl Gurney will be sharing Group B with 2018 Champions League finalist Peter Wright, World Matchplay champion Rob Cross and Grand Slam of Darts winner Gerwyn Price.

We’ll take a better look at the prices close to the event, but right now, ante-post betting at Betway is worth taking a look at. Michael van Gerwen leads the betting at 11/8 which will surely only draw in as the event gets closer. Rob Cross is currently at 9/2, while Peter Wright is at 6/1 and Gary Anderson 7/1.

Rounding out the odds are Michael Smith, who is priced 10/1, with Daryl Gurney, James Wade and Gerwyn Price all fancied at 12/1.

Gerwyn Price And Michael van Gerwen Win In Cardiff

Gerwyn Price And Michael van Gerwen Win In Cardiff

Gerwyn Price wins at the Darts Premier League

For once Gerwyn Price enjoyed the support of the crowd as the Welshman beat Michael Smith 8-5 in Cardiff last week.

It was an inspired performance in which the former rugby player hit back-to-back 170 checkouts at the Motorpoint Arena. The first of checkouts drew The Iceman level after Bully Boy had hit a 170 checkout of his own when taking the third. The bottom-placed Smith badly needed a win and forced his way in front twice more only to see The Iceman peg him back again. This was followed by arguably the leg of series, which featured four successive 180s from the pair before Price came out on top. From there, Price had little trouble from a deflated Smith before he closed out the match with an 11-darter.

In the battle for first place, Michael van Gerwen is now in the driver’s seat after putting challenger Rob Cross firmly in his place with an 8-2 demolition job. Voltage started stronger, breaking immediately and racing into a 2-0 lead thanks to an 80 checkout, before the match switched completely as MVG took over. After Voltage missed his shot at tops in the third, Mighty Mike made him pay with a 13-dart break of throw before punishing him completely and reeling off the next seven legs. This left Cross to go the rest of the night without getting another shot at a double.

The scoreline was repeated in the match between James Wade and Peter Wright with The Machine coming up the victor. Wright was woeful again and caused Wade, who remains third in the table, little to no problems. The Machine won five legs in succession from 3-2 up, and before The Machine chucked his match-winning double, Wright had missed eight of his own, which included four in that final leg. Wright, who is famous for switching his darts between — and sometimes even during matches — was using a new wobbly set which made absolutely no difference to his form as he succumbed to his fifth loss of the campaign.

The night’s final match was a playoff battle between Mensur Suljovic and Daryl Gurney with the Austrian just about managing to come out on top in an 8-5 victory. The result gives The Gentle a two-point lead over Superchin as he moves into 4th place with London looming. It was another scrappy affair and either player could have won.

Indeed, Gurney wasted 19 of 24 double attempts that would have made all the difference. He even blew a bullseye attempt for a 170 checkout in the third. It provided Suljovic with the opportunity he needed, duly replying with a close from 100 in 14 darts. Things were all square after six legs before Suljovic landed back-to-back legs in 13 and 14 darts, which established a two-gap lead that would last long enough to guarantee the Austrian a point. Gurney did manage to pull one back but Suljovic soon got himself over the line by taking the following leg and with it the match.

Premier League Darts Betting Tips

With The O2 just a month away now, Mensur Suljovic is firmly in the hunt for a playoff spot in fifth place as he shares points with James Wade and Gerwyn Price. In contrast, Michael Smith, who was the 2018 runner up, is currently bottom and another defeat last week only further dents his chances. Suljovic beat him 7-2 on night seven and with it all to play for, the Austrian could well repeat that scoreline again here in Birmingham.

The night’s second match features the challengers Rob Cross and Gerwyn Price. 2nd place Cross was on the wrong end of a spanking a week ago, while Price — currently in 4th with 14 points — defeated Bully Boy. In truth, come the end of May, I would expect both players to make the final four based on current form, but as things stand this week should see Voltage spark back into life and take the points. That said, don’t be surprised to see the unpredictable Iceman threaten the 2018 world champ who has won four of their six meetings.

The only things unpredictable about Peter Wright right now are his hair colour and choice of dart. His Premier League form has been nothing short of woeful for a man of his talent with little chance of making it to the playoffs. Superchin, on the other hand, is still in the hunt, even if he can be considered an outsider. Both players lost last week but Gurney at least held his own in defeat and should beat Snakebite, who left Cardiff embarrassed at the hands of James Wade.

Finally, Michael van Gerwen takes on James Wade, who is one of three players sitting on 14 points. Mighty Mike stamped his class and his authority on the league last week as he squashed Rob Cross and averaged 107 almost without reply. In contrast in his match, Wade averaged only 94 but still won out 8-2 — the same as MVG — and will be in confident mood having won three PDC titles relatively recently. The Machine also beat Van Gerwen in the Premier League earlier on this season, but the Dutchman will have too much for him on this occasion.

The following line at Betway on Thursday night’s action pays 16/1; Mensur Suljovic, Rob Cross, Daryl Gurney and Michael van Gerwen.

  • (6/4) Mensur Suljovic v Michael Smith (13/10)
  • (10/11) Rob Cross v Gerwyn Price (9/4)
  • (5/4) Daryl Gurney v Peter Wright (13/8)
  • (9/2) James Wade v Michael van Gerwen (4/9)
