Michael Van Gerwen On Night 10 Of The Darts Premier League

It was vintage Michael van Gerwen in last Thursday in Leeds as he moved clear of Jonny Clayton at the top of the Darts Premier League table.

MVG took on winless wonder James Wade in a final that only lasted a matter of minutes and may as well have been a whitewash.

True, he got a bye in the first round due to Gary Anderson’s covid enforced withdrawal, but on this form that would have been a formality anyway.

The Dutchman moved three points clear at the top of the table by becoming the first player to win a third-night title adding to his wins in Exeter and Brighton last month.

This is an event the former world number one has won on five occasions and in this form, he looks like another could be on the way.

Pete’s Tips For Night 10

  • Back Peter Wright or Gerwyn Price to throw a 180 in the first leg of the night’s opener for 11/10 at bet365.
  • Also from the night’s glamour tie between the world’s top two darters, why not back a 170 big fish finish from either player at 11/1, also at bet365.
  • We should get plenty of 180s in the final match of the night, no one has pinned more than Joe Cullen after all, and with Bully Boy being pretty tasty on the tipple 20s too, the 5/6 given at bet365 for there to be more 6.5 in the match looks likely to pay off.

Unfortunately, we did not predict Gerwyn Price’s new walk-on song.

Back To His Best

Someone as good as Michael van Gerwen was never going to be off the boil for very long and it feels like something big is stirring in the Green Machine right now.

Gary Anderson’s withdrawal meant that the world number three benefitted from going straight through to the semi-finals where defeated world champion Peter Wright 6-3 before laying on a whirlwind annihilation of James Wade in the final, winning 6-1 and posting a 103.87 average.

Racing into a three-leg lead following finishes of 76, 68 and a 14-darter, Mighty Mike closed out the match following 14 dart finish reply from Wade, with another 13-darter and another two legs of 15 and 11 darts to close out his third seasonal victory.

This week, play moves to Manchester and the AO Arena.

Peter Wright v Gerwyn Price

The world number one takes on the world number two to get things underway this Thursday and it’s hard to see anything other than a win for Snakebite.

Apart from one sensational night in Belfast where The Iceman was unplayable, Price really hasn’t been at the races in this year’s Darts Premier League.

He was unlucky to miss night five in Brighton with covid but hasn’t made a final since.

His broken hand is clearly bothering him, and a fortnight ago he looked like he was sporting a black eye.

On Saturday, he was shot down by world number 73 Gordon Mathers 6-5 in a Player Championship match so something is clearly not right with The Iceman.

It’s strange to think that neither of these two have picked up multiple night wins, but it’s Wright that looks the more likely.

Peter has 44 180s this year to a lowly 23 from Gerwyn Price, a mark lower than anyone else in the competition.

You get the impression that Price needs an early break of throw or time will run out on the short format race to six legs.

Although there is every chance that The Iceman is over the worst and could come roaring back in to form, I’m sticking with Snakebite to progress.

Gary Anderson v James Wade

Game two of night 10 pits Gary Anderson against two-time losing night finalist James Wade.

Wade is one of only two players left in the event still to win a night but after reaching – and losing – the last two finals, he is getting closer.

The Machine averaged 93.59 in last week’s final but still couldn’t live with MVG, but something similar out of the blocks this week could be more than enough to see off bottom-placed Anderson.

The Flying Scotsman has only got seven points on the board so far this season, but as we have seen elsewhere with Joe Cullen, one night win can really change everything.

He just doesn’t look like getting it anytime soon and I would expect a Wright versus Wade semi-final.

Michael van Gerwen v Jonny Clayton

The top two collide in match three.

Take nothing away from Jonny Clayton, he has been one of the more consistently impressive performers in this year’s Darts Premier League, but if last week was anything to go by, he is running into Michael van Gerwen at the exact wrong time.

Mighty Mike was back to looking like his old self in Leeds and, throwing first, has the darts to close the Ferret out.

After 16 rounds so far, MVG has the highest tournament average and has posted 13 ton plus checkouts, one ahead of James Wade.

The Green Machine even put in a 103.87 performance in the final last week and, with that being the last I saw him, is enough for him to get my backing this week in Manchester.

Joe Cullen v Michael Smith

The final match of the evening is Joe Cullen and Michael Smith.

With no draws allowed in the Premier League of Darts someone has to win this one and I think that will be Michael Smith.

In a rematch of the UK Open final, a match won by Joe Cullen by the way, Smith is desperate for a night title although he is likely to run into MVG in the next round.

No one has popped in more 180’s in this year’s tourney than Joe Cullen’s 47 but The Rockstar was well beaten by Jonny Clayton last week.

Not that Bully Boy fared much better in his first round match but, Rotterdam aside, Cullen hasn’t quite looked right for a little while and with Smith sporting the top doubles and checkout percentage across the whole league, the St Helens chucker gets the nod.

Jonny Clayton Night 9 Darts Premier League

Jonny Clayton moved level with Michael van Gerwen at the top of the Darts Premier League after winning his second-night title last week in Birmingham.

The Ferret, who also won on night two in Liverpool, opened up the evening with a 6-1 thrashing of Michael Smith in which he averaged 99.

He elevated his performance even further in his next match where he took out Peter Wright 6-4, raising his average to 103.68 in a match where Snakebite fired in six 180s and averaged 107.71.

There was more to come from the Welshman, however, as he put in a 111.16 average in the night’s final, a match he won 6-1 against James Wade, who despite reaching two finals, remains one of two players still to win an evening alongside Michael Smith.

The Machine’s performance in the second city does, however, lift him off the bottom of the table and up into fifth place ahead of Gerwyn Price.

After losing 6-5 to Wright in the quarter-finals, Nottingham winner Gary Anderson now occupies bottom spot at the halfway stage ahead of June’s play offs.

The action now moves to the First Direct Arena in Leeds for Night 9. Let’s take a look at the matches on Thursday along with some Darts Premier Night 9 betting picks.

Michael Smith v Peter Wright

The ninth night of this year’s Premier League of Darts gets underway in a match that sees Michael Smith take on Peter Wright.

Bully Boy is still to win a night and fell at the first last week in Birmingham.

The world number one on the other hand was an unfortunate loser seven days ago.

At times, Snakebite put in a sensational shift in his semi-final defeat to Jonny Clayton and on a different day he would have won that game.

The Scotsman also went well over the weekend in the Pro Tour events.

He didn’t register a win but did reach a final with some put in some pretty decent performances over all in the face of some good quality averages going against him.

Only Joe Cullen has hit more 180s (45) than Peter Wright’s 44. These two shared 41 between them in the Darts World Championship final in January so we can expect a high scoring encounter this week in Leeds.

We would expect Wright to take it on the doubles, however.

Gary Anderson v Michael van Gerwen

Should Snakebite make it through, he will face the winner of a tie between Gary Anderson and Michael van Gerwen.

These two met on the opening night in Cardiff in a match The Flying Scotsman came out on top.

Since then, however, The Green Machine has roared back into form, winning two nights to Anderson’s one to find himself top of the table on leg difference.

Both of these guys have been around the block, won it all and know each other’s game inside out, but based on what we saw from both of them last week, it’s the Dutchman that is favoured even if he wasn’t at his best last Thursday.

Joe Cullen v Jonny Clayton

The third match of the evening pits Joe Cullen up against last week’s champion Jonny Clayton.

The Ferret was in superb form a week ago, improving in each of his three games to go second in the table.

The Rockstar looked good in round one where he took out a lacklustre Gerwyn Price, but Clayton looked even better and was simply unplayable at times.

The only question remains that there are the occasional spells where he comes off the boil a little bit.

That being said, Clayton has won both of their meetings so far in the Premier League without playing at his best, and another win for The Ferret looks to be on the cards.

James Wade v Gerwyn Price

The final match of the night is between last week’s losing finalist James Wade and the world’s number two Gerwyn Price.

Normally, we would put our faith in The Iceman here, but he is not with it right now.

His broken hand is clearly hampering him and last week he looked like he was sporting a black eye too, possibly as a result of his sparring practice for his upcoming boxing match for charity.

The Welshman struggled over the weekend at the Pro Tour too.

In a race to six, throwing first is such an advantage and that, plus the fact that Price seems to be focused elsewhere right now, means we are giving the nod to The Machine in the night’s closing quarter-final.

From there, we’re backing the two stand out players from last week to proceed to the last match of the night.

In a Jonny Clayton v Peter Wright final, things really could go either way, but its high time Snakebite won another night and become a two time winner and he can be backed at 9/2 with bet365 to do exactly that.

Joe Cullen Darts Premier League 2022

We have another new nightly winner in this years’ Darts Premier League after Joe Cullen beat home favourite Michael van Gerwen in the final to win night seven in Rotterdam.

In an action-packed night in which all but four matches went the full 11 legs and all four losers had missed match darts.

And because five out of seven matches went the full length, the Dutch fans were treated to 74 legs of a possible maximum of 77 meaning they certainly got their money’s worth even if they didn’t see a win for their main man.

Showing exactly how quickly things can change in this new format, Cullen started the night on the bottom of the Premier League of Darts table, but following his win in Holland is now the occupier of the fourth and final play off spot, nudging out Gerwyn Price in the process.

Cullen’s win also means that Michael Smith and James Wade are the only two remaining participants still that have not won a night, although Bully Boy has at least reached and lost a brace of finals.

Rocking It Up In Rotterdam

Joe Cullen went into last week’s event at the Ahoy Arena on the back of a five-match losing streak with his last points coming when he came second in Liverpool back in February.

Things didn’t look like they getting any better when he found himself 5-3 down in a bad-tempered quarter-final match against Gary Anderson.

The Rockstar survived four match darts, two of which were in the deciding leg, to eventually take the honours 6-3 over the previous week’s winner, who at the end of the match accused Cullen of cheating.

It’s thought that The Flying Scotsman was unhappy over a moment of alleged encroachment, but Cullen seemed surprised that there was even an issue.

The Bradford born Premier League debutant only averaged 92.82 in his opener against The Flying Scotsman and actually got away with an even lower average of 88.17 in his semi-final encounter with the league’s other Scottish star Peter Wright.

The UK Open champion chucked in four of the six 180s in his match against the world number one, who wasted a staggering 11 doubles out of 15 and was eventually sent packing in a 4-6 defeat to The Rockstar.

10,000 Sea Of Orange

Cullen then progressed to the final where he felt the full force of the 10,000 strong orange army of fans who were roaring for their home hero Michael Van Gerwen who lives nearby.

Van Gerwen had also been required to survive match darts in the deciding leg of his quarter-final with Michael Smith but raised his game considerably to produce a much better performance against Jonny Clayton in the last four to win 6-3 with a 103 average.

The final, like most matches of the night, went to a deciding leg where Cullen had the darts and found the form to fire in a 14 darter. The win powered by a brace of 180s to give the Rockstar his first Premier League night title of the season.

All of the quarter-finals had gone the full eleven legs and the other two saw Peter Wright – whose back is thought to be hurting him but doesn’t stop leaping about on stage after his walkout – overcome James Wade in the opener.

Elsewhere, the all Welsh affair between Jonny Clayton and Gerwyn Price also went all the way down to the wire, with The Ferret just about pipping The Iceman.

Michael van Gerwen vs James Wade

Top plays bottom in the night’s opener at the Utilita Arena, Birmingham as Michael van Gerwen takes on James Wade.

Mighty Mike boasts a 15-4 head to head score over The Machine and has also made the last three finals.

In terms of current form, van Gerwen has won eight matches from his last ten, while Wade has lost six matches from the last ten that he has played.

The new format has done James Wade no favours.

In a previous season, three wins in seven matches so far probably wouldn’t have seen him bottom of the table at this point, but nevertheless, he remains one of only two players still to win a night.

If Wade can bank a win, he, just as Joe Cullen found last week, could rocket up the table and things could look very different by the end of the night.

Also, relegation is not an issue this year as there is no Judgement Night.

He has made the final once, losing to Gerwyn Price on a night where the Welshman thundered in two nine darters, but The Machine still finds himself propping up the pack and we can’t see him getting the better of the Dutchman, who has two ranking titles this season on top of his two nightly Premier League triumphs, this week.

Joe Cullen vs Gerwyn Price

The second match of the night sees last week’s winner Joe Cullen step out against former world number one Gerwyn Price.

Question marks still remain about the condition of The Iceman’s hand and, after missing a week then banking minimum points a week later, he went out straight away last week when losing to his World Cup winning partner for Wales, Jonny Clayton.

He really needs to get going if he is to reclaim his playoff spot that was taken from him seven days ago, ironically by tonight’s opponent.

On paper this would like a good game for Price to revive his Premier League Darts hopes, but the match up between the pair is much closer than you might have thought, reading 6-5 in favour of The Rockstar.

And yet, Cullen has the lowest tournament average of 92.37 and is also the least clinical finisher in this year’s Premier League of Darts.

From his last ten, Price has only managed to win half, so form is in question as much as fitness, although the two are clearly linked.

He did, however, take down a Players Championship event in Germany on Saturday so perhaps things are looking up for The Iceman.

If both are better in Birmingham, then Price should win, at his best he can blast players off the oche.

But with the momentum Cullen, who proved you can play well below your best and still walk away victorious, is trying to build, and those fitness questions around The Iceman, we’re leaning toward The Rockstar this week.

Peter Wright vs Gary Anderson

The night’s third match is an all Scotland affair that sees Peter Wright throw off against Gary Anderson.

When it comes to the head to head between the two, Anderson is slightly in front 10-7, but Snakebite won the last time they met.

But Wright, like Price, is another player carrying an injury that could have a huge say in how things play out, especially given the quality of his opponent.

Wright has only won in half of his last ten games, while The Flying Scotsman has seven over that time, so neither is in great shape.

We would normally favour the world number one, but just as with The Iceman, injury is forcing us to look the other way.

Peter Wright is streaky at the best of times as proven by his averaging over 100 on seven occasions so far, but also hitting around the 80 mark another four times.

Worse still, three of those have come in his last four outings.

He sat out the weekend’s events in Germany in favour of a rest and will no doubt have new darts, but Anderson has been the better player of late, even if he doesn’t look like he’s enjoying it.

Jonny Clayton vs Michael Smith

The fourth and final match of the quarter-finals pits Jonny Clayton and Michael Smith against each other.

Bully Boy is one of just two players yet to win a Premier League night and faces a tough night against The Ferret.

This year’s Darts Premier League is proving very tough to call and this game definitely falls into that.

Reigning Premier League champ Clayton is third in the table and has four more points than Smith, but it’s the St Helens’ man who has looked the more dangerous in recent weeks and has won three of their last four matches.

After a poor start, the Bully Boy looks close to winning a night and has reached two of the last three finals.

In terms of the head to head between the pair, it reads 8-3 in Smith’s favour, but this could well be The Ferret’s night.
