Premier League Darts 2021 Schedule Announced

Premier League Darts 2021 Schedule Announced

The PDC has announced the dates – and venue – for this year’s delayed Darts Premier League.

While we await news of the fixtures, we at least have a start date for Darts longest-lasting event.

Unfortunately, the understandable decision to postpone proceedings in order to tour the event around local venues in order to allow for fans, hasn’t paid off.

Darts Premier League Once again in Milton Keynes

The weekly first stage, which will last for nine nights, will take place in its entirety at the now extremely familiar Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes.

It will, of course, take place behind closed doors too.

Judgement Night, as ever, will see the bottom-placed two players in the league table eliminated.

From there, seven more nights will take place as we work our way towards the playoffs, which according to the latest government guidelines, might well finally allow for fans to be in attendance as we potentially work our way out of lockdown.

As always, players will earn two points for a win, and one for a draw, with the first stage of the tourney played to the best of 12 legs.

The top four players in the table after 16 rounds will contest the playoffs.

We also know this year’s Premier League Darts line-up. It was confirmed after the Darts Masters in January, which was won by the other member of Wales’ Darts World Cup winning duo Jonny Clayton.

As such, Clayton joins other PDC maiden victors, Jose De Sousa and Dimitri Van den Bergh as the three debutants of this year’s event which will begin on the 5th of April.

They are joined in the 10-player tournament by defending champion Glen Durrant, new world number one Gerwyn Price, five times DPL winner Michael van Gerwen, plus Nathan Aspinall, Peter Wright, Gary Anderson and Rob Cross.

Peter Wright goes into the tournament as the defending champion, but it is Gerwyn Price who is the new world champion and also the new world number one, meaning this is the first time in seven years that Michael van Gerwen goes into a tournament ranked second in the world.

Odds for the PDC Darts Masters

Not that it has done anything for the odds. Mighty Mike begins this tourney as 5/2 favourite with bet365.

That said, this is probably the longest price we have seen on MVG in a long time. Given that he now plays with the pressure off, or at least dimmed, can he be expected to bounce back from his Ally Pally disappointment and claim this trophy for a sixth time? Yes, of course he can.

A win for the new world number one would see Gerwyn Price repeat what Peter Wright achieved this time last year and follow on the success in the World Championships by immediately taking down the Masters too. One thing is for sure, the Iceman won’t rest on his win at the worlds and has the sporting drive to push on and have another great year.

Not seeing anyone throw since the festive season, we have no idea about current form for any of the 24 competing darters, but it would, at first glance, seemingly come down to two things as to who wins this first new event of the season. Whether a stung Michael van Gerwen is looking for revenge or whether a buoyed Gerwyn Price is in invincible mode.

These two are quite a bit above everyone else right now after all so the answer to the above could unlock the next destination of the Masters trophy.

Gerwyn’s Price is 3/1 at bet365

These two, along with Rob Cross, James Wade, Nathan Aspinall, Dave Chisnall, Gary Anderson and Peter Wright, will all wait out the first night and join in play during in Saturday’s second round.

This means that there are plenty of interesting match ups on day one and some potentially explosive games likely on day two.

Nathan Aspinall could face either Ian White or Mensur Suljovic, while Glen Durrant takes on Mervyn King for the chance to play Rob Cross in the second stage. Looking at Duzza’s post Premier League form, Mervyn King looks a good shout to run deep here and wont fear Cross right now should that play out.

Elsewhere, there are several players who must do well to stand a chance of getting that last Premier League spot. The potential eye-catcher in regards to the Premier League participation is the possible matchup between world number six Dave Chisnall and Daryl Gurney, should Superchin make it past Jeffrey de Zwaan in the first round.

Bet365 odds wise, Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright is 7/1, which is half the value offered on Gary Anderson who may be inspired after making the final at the Alexandra Palace. Punters can get 16/1 on Dimitri van den Bergh should they be looking for it, while Nathan Aspinall is available at 16/1.

Bully Boy Michael Smith, who will surely be the most disappointed to miss out on a Premier League place, can be backed at 20/1. It’s the same price that’s being offered on Dave Chisnall, who so brilliantly dismissed MVG a little over a month ago.

Gerwyn ‘The Iceman’ Price Wins PDC World Championships + A Look At The 2021 PDC Schedule

Gerwyn Price PDC World Championships 2021

We have a new world champion and new world number one.

On Sunday, Gerwyn Price became the first ever Welsh winner of the PDC World Darts Championships when he saw off the challenge of two times winner Gary Anderson.

The Iceman played his esteemed opponent off the oche when he posted a 7-3 win at the Ally Pally and he’s now replaced Michael van Gerwen as world number one. It is the first time in seven years that MVG has been displaced at the world’s top.

Former Rugby man Price boasted an 80% checkout average at one point in the final and even broke the record for the highest set average in World Championship history when he took out the sixth with 136.64, courtesy of an 11-darter with a 100 checkout, a 12-darter with a 161, before a 10-darter as he just missed out on the perfect leg.

The Welshman, who this year also banked the World Grand Prix and the World Cup, did somehow manage to waste 11 match darts to make things look closer than they actually were but eventually nailed the double five with his 12th match dart to take himself to the pinnacle of his newest sport and lift the Sid Waddell Trophy for the first time.

New Year, New Season

Now, all eyes are turn towards the new PDC season. Everything gets underway all over again on the 29th of January when the PDC Darts Masters gets the season off to a hopefully thrilling start.

This year, the posted PDC schedule looks a little more tentative than in previous seasons. One thing we do know is that the Premier League Darts, which should under normal conditions, get going in February, has been delayed until further notice in the hope that they can bring the game to as many fans as possible, a critical element of the Premier League which travels from venue to venue each Thursday for three months.

All the same, the 2021 Premier League Darts line up has been announced. This year the PDC have done away with the weekly local contender element in the tourney’s structure as play reverts back to 10 weekly regulars.

These are, new world No 1 Gerwyn Price, five times winner Michael van Gerwen, reigning champion Glen Durrant, Peter Wright, Gary Anderson, Rob Cross and Nathan Aspinall. 2020 PDC winners Dimitri van den Bergh and Jose de Sousa will make their debuts, while the final player will be announced after The Masters later this month.

In other news, the upcoming PDC Darts Masters, the season’s traditional curtain raiser, will be expanded from 16 players to 24 players, with this year’s tournament beginning on January 29 and finishing on 31 at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes.
