Peter Wright World Cup of Darts

Pete’s World Cup of Darts Betting Tips

  • We like backing Wales to post a 5-0 whitewash against the Philippines in their tournament opener at 6/4 with bet365.
  • Expect there to be over 7.5 total legs in England’s match against The Czech Republic, available at 1/1 with bet365.
  • bet365 is also offering the boosted price of 7/2 from 3/1 on The Netherlands winning by a 5-2 score line in their match against Brazil.

All of these betting lines were correct at the time the article was posted.

With the Darts Premier League now firmly behind us, we move on to the PDC World Cup of Darts which gets underway at Frankfurt’s Eissporthalle on June 16th.

There will be 32 nations battling it out over four days for the title which is currently in the possession of 2021 champs Scotland.

Once again represented by Peter Wright and John Henderson, Scotland will fancy their chances of retaining the crown they won a year ago when they beat Austria in the final.

If they do manage to win it for the second year in a row, then it will be the third title for Scotland in four years.

This is the 12th staging of the annual pairs event and will feature eight of the planet’s top ten darts players on the PDC Order of Merit and with first-round fixtures such as The Netherlands versus Brazil and Wales taking on The Philippines, there will certainly be some mismatches to enjoy.

Hopefully, there will also be a few shocks on the cards too.

Let’s see what we can look forward to.

Top Half Of The Draw

England, who will be represented by Michael Smith and James Wade, are officially the top-ranked team in the tournament.

The Bully Boy and The Machine are ranked fourth and fifth in the world respectively.

Wade comes in for Rob Cross who partnered Smith in last year’s event where England disappointed, losing to Austria in the last four.

There is a very strong possibility of the English meeting Scotland in the quarter-final stage should they both play to their best in the opening few matches.

Going with the rankings, you would have to fancy England over Scotland in that match despite the inclusion of the world number one Peter Wright.

Snakebite’s World Cup partner, John ‘The Highlander’ Henderson is ranked back in lowly 67th place so will have his work cut out against England’s top pairing.

That could lead to a potential semi-final against Poland, who have an opening game against the USA to kick things off.

England then will surely be disappointed not to at least reach the final.

Bottom Half Of The Draw

On the other side of the draw, Wales and The Netherlands provide the big names and these two should meet in the last four.

Wales is the most interesting as we have seen a real power dynamic shift in the pair that won the 2020 renewal.

Although still ranked second in the world, Gerwyn Price hasn’t been playing well this season, while Jonny Clayton was the best player by far at the recent Darts Premier League where he topped the table but failed to lift the trophy.

That honour went to Michael van Gerwen who beat Joe Cullen in Monday night’s final at the Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin

Mighty Mike won’t be moving on to Frankfurt to play for his country though who will instead be represented by Danny Noppert and Dirk van Duijvenbode.

While they do still make a formidable pairing, you do get the impression that this could throw the momentum to Wales should they meet.

Backing Wales to overcome The Netherlands then, and maybe we can expect an England versus Wales final.

This hypothetical final could go either way but with The Iceman and The Ferret being friends in real life and having won this title together two years ago, I think they are better set to take down the 2022 World Cup of Darts.

Michael Smith Darts Premier League Win

Pete’s DPL Betting Tips for Night 16

  • Jonny Clayton has thrown more 180s than any one else in this year’s Darts Premier League and I expect him to outscore Joe Cullen in the night’s opener at 6/4 with bet365.
  • Back James Wade to take his match with Michael van Gerwen all the way and get it over the line with a 10-9 win for 9/1 at bet365.
  • With a 10-9 score line, bettors can get 5/6 on there being over 16.5 total legs in the same match, again at bet365.

All of these betting lines were correct at the time the article was posted.

It may well be too little too late but, as we predicted last week, Michael Smith finally won a night in this year’s Premier League of Darts.

Bully Boy had been the last player to win a nightly title and at the very last attempt finally managed to bank a win which came in Newcastle at the at the expense of Jonny Clayton

On the same night, Joe Cullen sealed his play-off spot ahead of Peter Wright meaning that the world’s number one and two won’t be in Berlin for the finals.

Smith entered into the final night of the league phase knowing that he had no chance of making it to Germany.

He had been a runner-up to both Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson earlier on in the campaign but finally got over the line after seeing off the table-topping Ferret 6-3 to break his duck.

Earlier in the night, the World Championship of Darts runner-up saw off Michael van Gerwen 6-4 before dismissing Gerwyn Price by six legs to three.

Bully Boy then produced an average of 98 in the final where he pinned six out of nine on his doubles and produced a match-winning checkout of 112.

Smith ended up in sixth place in the table, leapfrogging Gerwyn Price who endured a miserable campaign, and one place behind Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright, who saw his play-off hopes dashed by tournament debutant Joe Cullen in a winner takes all quarter final clash.

Cullen finished the season in fourth place behind James Wade after losing to table topping Jonny Clayton in the semi-finals and the pair will now meet again in the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin for the play-offs on June 13th.

In the other semi final, Mighty Michael Van Gerwen will meet James Wade in a best of 19 legs match, while the final will be played to the best of 21.

Jonny Clayton V Joe Cullen

Joe Cullen heads into this match looking to emulate what his opponent achieved one year ago when Jonny Clayton lifted the Darts Premier League trophy having qualified for the tournament after winning the Darts Masters.

The Rockstar became the fourth and final qualifier last week in Newcastle when he won in the first round against Peter Wright, ending the world number one’s hopes of getting to Berlin.

Cullen lost in his second match to Clayton a week ago and the Welshman has been the DPL’s outstanding player this term, making it to eight finals and winning four of them

The Ferret has also chucked in an incredible 87 180s, averaging 0.28 per leg over 308 legs.

In short, Cullen has his work cut out for him unless something drastic happens to the form of the Ferret over the next two weeks while the players head out to New York and Copenhagen respectively.

In all fairness, at the very least, Clayton deserves to reach the final and I would expect him to do so.

Michael van Gerwen V James Wade

The league’s other outstanding player this year was Michael van Gerwen and he steps out next against James Wade.

I can never work out why the bookies don’t seem to rate Wade as much as he surely deserves.

I really think the regular Machine has what it takes to see off the Green Machine in Berlin.

Mighty Mike has looked back to his best at times during this year’s campaign but has also had a number of first-round exits and put in some really sub-par performances as well.

The Machine on the other hand has ploughed on regardless, not exactly thrilling any one, but not losing either and I can see MVG struggling to shake him off here.

The Dutchman is of course the favourite to win the match, and the whole competition as well, but Wade wont go away without putting up a real fight and I expect he will make the most of any slip ups van Gerwen makes which could prove to be the difference.

Should the underdog make it to the final where I would expect Jonny Clayton to be waiting, we will have a real match on our hands.

In what will be an extremely tough contest, I would back Jonny Clayton to retain his Premier League of Darts crown.

Darts Premier League Night 16

Pete’s DPL Betting Tips for Night 16

  • I like the look of bet365’s 4/1 on Peter Wright to overcome Joe Cullen 6-4 in the night’s most important match.
  • As the darter who has chucked in the most 180s in this year’s Premier League of Darts, we should be able to expect over 5.5 maximums in table-topping Jonny Clayton’s match against Gary Anderson, which has been priced up at 5/4 with bet365.
  • In the same match where top takes on bottom, bet365 has boosted a Jonny Clayton winning scoreline of 6-2 from 6/1 to 7/1 which is too good to turn down.

All of these betting lines were correct at the time the article was posted (3:30 PM UK time)

We now know who three of the final four 2022 Premier League of Darts play off finalists will be as Gerwyn Price became the latest player eliminated, leaving only Peter Wright and Joe Cullen in with a chance of bagging the final spot.

It was Cullen that won night 15 after winning in the final against Johnny Clayton, who himself is guaranteed to finish on top following another three points in the bag.

In a thrilling final, The Rockstar beat Clayton 6-4 in which he was on top for much of the match before a 144 checkout from the Welshman looked like swinging the game.

Clayton was unable to lose Cullen, however, who held in there before seizing his chance when it came to him by hitting double eight for a 62 finish.

While Clayton banked the top spot by beating Michael Smith 6-4 in his semi-final, Michael van Gerwen cannot be caught in second place despite going out in the first round in a defeat to the Bully Boy.

As for Cullen, he made the final of night 15 following a brace of 6-1 wins over Scottish pair Gary Anderson and Peter Wright.

The Premier League roadshow now moves on to Newcastle’s Utilita Arena for the final night of regular Darts Premier League phase action on Thursday May 26, with Wright and Cullen facing off in a winner-takes-all clash.

Jonny Clayton v Gary Anderson

Guaranteed top plays guaranteed bottom to open up the night’s action as Jonny Clayton faces off against Gary Anderson.

That was always the plan for the new format of the competition which, for the most part, has been a success.

However, it does mean that we have a few blank squibs — this is one of them. Other than prize money, these two don’t really have anything to play for.

The Ferret has enjoyed a fantastic campaign, but the same cannot be said for Anderson, who has only banked five wins, three of which came on the same night.

Whether The Flying Scotsman will want to put on a show in his last match of this year’s tournament remains to be seen, but the form is with the Welshman, who confirmed Gerwyn Price’s elimination last week in the quarter-finals.

Clayton has now hit more 180s than anyone this season with 87, which works out to be 0.28 per leg.

He has also pinned 21 ton plus checkouts which is more than enough to keep faith with The Ferret this week.

Joe Cullen v Peter Wright

This is the match of the night as the world number one attempts to try and survive in this year’s Darts Premier League.

As we stand, it’s Cullen that occupies the fourth spot and so has the chance to throw first.

The Rockstar has twice this year benefitted from byes following quarter-final opponent withdrawals, meaning he has only technically won five first-round matches.

While there is no reason to assume he would have lost one or both of those matches, against Gerwyn Price and James Wade respectively, there is a touch of good fortune about The Rockstar going into the final match of this year’s campaign in the fourth spot.

Cullen has the lowest average out of all eight darters with 92.05 compared to Wright’s third-placed 96.68, while his finishing percentage is also the worst with a strike rate of just 37%.

The Rockstar did look good one week ago winning all three matches to keep his hopes alive but was thrashed 6-1 by Rowby-John Rodriguez in a European Tour event over the weekend.

At the same time, Peter Wright hit Jonny Clayton for the same score line and a 103 average.

Snakebite then managed a 111 in a 6-1 quarter-final win over Danny Noppert.

Cullen has the darts, but Snakey has the form so I’m siding with the Scotsman to bank the final play off spot.

Michael van Gerwen v Michael Smith

There’s another dead rubber in the night’s third match.

This is the fourth week running that Michael van Gerwen and Michael Smith have played each other and the sixth time this season.

It was a case of too little too late last week as the Bully Boy finally broke his 2022 duck against Mighty Mike.

That, however, proved to be in vain as losing to Jonny Clayton in the next round meant that Smith cannot now make it to Rotterdam.

While MVG has been the dominant player and is already through to the play offs, there isn’t much between them when they play.

Smith is now only playing for pride, and he remains the only player not to win a night title.

Apart from running into The Green Machine six times out of 24 games this season, which includes three semi finals and a final, his other three final four matches all came against the player of the tournament, Jonny Clayton, so he hasn’t had it easy.

With all of the other important business taken care of we’ll back The Bully Boy for one last shot at ‘glory’.

James Wade v Gerwyn Price

Back in February when the 2022 Darts Premier League was just getting started, Gerwyn Price was the bet365 darts betting favourite at 11/4.

At the same time, bet365 had put a 20/1 mark on the head of James Wade.

As it turns out, it’s the Machine that will have it all to play for when the play offs get underway on Monday May the 13th and The Iceman won’t be there.

In hindsight, despite his average of 94.5 being among the lowest of the eight, the format turned out to be perfectly suited for Wade who is one of the hardest players to shake off and never gives up.

He just hung on in there in a lot of his games and, as one of the best finishers on the circuit, simply picked off his rivals on a consistent basis throughout the campaign.

As for Gerwyn, he has enjoyed moments of bad luck during this year’s competition, missing a night through covid and breaking a hand.

The Iceman has only pinned two ton-plus averages in his past 14 Premier League of Darts games and they both came when he won his second night a fortnight ago in Sheffield.

Despite showing some true moments of brilliance, not least in Belfast where he blasted in a pair of nine darters on the same night, he has looked disinterested for the most part and I can’t see that changing here.
