Of the heavyweights, only Gary Anderson will be missing after choosing not to travel. Michael van Gerwen will be there, however, and has started to raise his game after he unimaginably missed out on the Darts Premier League playoffs, a poor performance which followed losing to Dimitri van den Bergh at the World Matchplay.

MVG has been quickly installed as favourite and, as the number one seed, finds himself in the sweeter side of the draw. Bear in mind though that MVG is destined to meet Premier League leader Glen Durrant or his new/old nemesis Van den Bergh in round two.

Those two meet in round one and if Duzza can bring his Darts Premier League A game to Austria then you would think that a clash with the Dutch world number one beckons next. A wager on Duzza, win or each way, is tempting given his pre-tournament odds of 16/1.

There must surely be some money lumped on two-time Grand Slam of Darts champion Gerwyn Price, however, who arrives in the kind of form that has seen him book to back Autumn Series successes in which he averaged 104 over six matches.

The Iceman is another that didn’t make it to the Darts Premier League playoffs and this week finds himself in the bottom half of the draw along with world champion Peter Wright and Nathan Aspinall, but if he can summon the same form here in Salzburg that he has produced of late, then the Welshman can go all the way and claim another TV title.

If you are looking for a longer odds darter, at least at each way, then may we suggest Krzysztof Ratajski, a member of the top 16 and already a winner on the tour this season. The Polish Eagle also made the last eight of the World Matchplay and finished eighth in the Autumn Series Order of Merit and meets Mensur Suljovic first up on Friday.

As a local hero, Suljovic will have the crowd behind him though making him a tough hurdle to get past.

The event will be shown on ITV4 this Friday at 1900 GMT.

Glen Durrant, of course, had already qualified nights in advance and beats Peter Wright into second place. The pair will be joined in next month’s playoff stage at the O2 Arena in East London by Nathan Aspinall, who finished third, plus two times DPL winner Gary Anderson.

Duzza, like Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen before him, becomes a DPL table topper, only the third in Darts Premier League history.

Recapping Night 10

Mighty Mike had a horrific last few days of play and is now unable to defend the crown he had been aiming to win for a fifth straight time this coming October. The world number one had finished in first place in all of his seven league appearances since debuting in 2013.

MVG had also never lost more than four games in a regular season before; earlier in the week suffered an 8-1 trouncing to Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright, his sixth defeat of the campaign.

That game also marked the first time in 139 Premier League matches that Michael van Gerwen had failed to get three legs on the board in a match and now it’s happened twice in three days. His recent poor form culminated in an 8-2 defeat at the hands of Daryl ‘Superchin’ Gurney, who had only his pride to play for.

Gary Anderson opened the night, also with a heavy loss, his coming at the hands of an 8-3 defeat to Gerwyn Price. Price’s victory left him with a little hope of qualification to cling on to, but he could only watch and wait while other results went against him on the night.

Sadly for the Iceman, he missed out on the play-offs for the second season in a row despite completing a DPL season double over The Flying Scotsman, a win that proved to be the result that cemented Duzza’s place at the top.

Duzza himself enjoyed a great campaign, but with qualification assured, effectively took the night off against Nathan Aspinall who ran out 8-2 winner. In the night’s other match, an increasingly confident Peter Wright ended any hopes Michael ‘Bully Boy’ Smith might have had of qualification when Snakebite won 8-5.

With six weeks and the World Series of Darts Finals to go before the O2’s playoffs, bet365 have been quick to install Peter Wright as the 13/8 outright favourite for the Darts Premier League ahead of Gary Anderson’s 11/4.

After such a dominant debut performance from Glen Durrant, particularly after lockdown, why the same bookmakers have deemed Duzza’s claim’s to be worth as much as 7/2 is anyone guess. Likewise, Nathan Aspinall’s 10/3 is also puzzling, but either way, neither price can be expected to last long.

We have enjoyed four nights of excellent top class arrows already this week as we blitz through the rest of the Premier League schedule. Last night, Judgement Night saw Rob Cross throw his last darts of the 2020 campaign as he was eliminated following his dismal defeat at the hands of Glen Durrant.

From here, anyone remaining will now be fancying their chances of reaching the playoffs. There’s no time to rest however as there are still another six nights play to be held over the next eight days as the action refuses to let up.

Tonight, things continue starting with the current table topper.

Glen Durrant V Gerwyn Price

What an opener this promises to be as the game’s two most in-form darters going head to head.

Duzza is holding on to a two point cushion at the top and will be buzzing from a hugely impressive three days so far in Milton Keynes.

On Tuesday, Duzza saw off Peter Wright before dismissing Michael van Gerwen in a 7-3 mauling which preceded Thursday’s 7-4 win over Rob Cross that saw the 2018 World Champion eliminated.

His opponent Gerwyn Price has dropped just the one solitary leg over the last two nights beating Gary Anderson and Jermaine Wattimena 7-1 and 7-0 respectively. The Welshman is looking far more like himself at the minute and together these two players in particular look as though they are enjoying the one match per day format.

This is maybe too tough to call and I just cant split this pair so I’ll go with a draw.

Peter Wright v Gary Anderson

Two world champions play next as Scottish pair Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright and Gary ‘The Flying Scotsman’ Anderson go head-to-head in game two.

Only two points separate these two World Cup winning teammates with Wright, second in the table, slightly ahead of Anderson.

Last month’s World Matchplay runner-up Gary Anderson is tied on points in fourth with Michael van Gerwen whom he has beaten 7-4 since the restart as well as Michael Smith but was sent packing by Gerwyn Price a day later.

Wright has posted back to back wins over Jeffrey de Zwaan and Daryl Gurney but he really should have recorded a 100% record this week and would have done were it not for some dodgy maths during his 6-6 draw with Glen Durrant on Tuesday.

This is sure to be another tight one and could go either way but, buoyed on from beating MVG last night, I think Anderson could well take the points here.

Nathan Aspinall v Michael van Gerwen

Michael van Gerwen has, rather unusually, lost back-to-back to games in as many nights. So unusual, in fact, that it’s the first time that’s happened in the Premier League since 2018.

The world number one is facing Nathan Aspinall, who battled back brilliantly to beat Michael Smith 7-5 last night when looking at defeat in the face.

That said, MVG’s poor run will end at some point and I think that point could well be tonight.

Michael Smith v Daryl Gurney

Daryl Gurney narrowly survived Judgement Night and will today play Michael Smith for his efforts. Bully Boy has hit 18 maximums hit in his last three games but somehow managed to lose on Thursday when he had victory almost in the bag against Nathan Aspinall.

With Rob Cross now gone, these two are the bottom pair and need to turn things around soon in the hope of making it to London for October’s revised playoff schedule.

Gurney has averaged a total 92.24 over his three games this week and could struggle against Smith, who is favourite for a reason. I think Smith will win with ease here unless Superchin can find some form from somewhere.
