UK Open Darts Betting Tips

Less than 24 hours after the PDC pitched up in Exeter for last night’s Darts Premier League, the corporation makes its return to Minehead for the 2022 UK Open.

Known as the FA Cup of Darts, there is a draw after every round so anybody can play anyone else at any time.

The open draw format and three days of two sessions with multiple matches going off on different stages make this one of the most unique and difficult events in professional darts and can provide an opportunity to find a big-priced winner.

Last year’s tournament was held behind closed doors at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes, but it will be a different story this year as the event, which was won in 2021 by James Wade, returns to its spiritual home at the Butlins Resort and will be welcomed by a full crowd.

Titanic Battle For Number One Spot

After battling it out last night in Exeter in the first round, it was Peter Wright that came out on top in his first-round match against Gerwyn Price.

This followed a win for the Iceman over Wright in the International Darts Open last weekend that just about kept his lead at the top of the PDC Order of Merit, with an extra £6,500 more in winnings than the Scot.

However, a victory for Snakebite at Minehead would see Wright top of the rankings for the first time in his career.

Price, who tends to get a warmer welcome here than in other venues, is still to win the UK Open but has twice made the final of this competition.

The Iceman knows that his number one spot is under considerable threat and will be gone by Sunday if he fails to reach the final, regardless of what Snakebite does this weekend.

That outcome would require Snakebite to show the kind of quality he did last night in his first two games and indeed in 2017 when he won this very tournament.

The UK Open gave Wright his maiden PDC major title. Since then, he has picked up a further six major titles, most recently the World Championship

Despite a whitewash defeat to Michael van Gerwen in last night’s Darts Premier League Night Four final, Snakebite is on red form right now, while Price, who himself was sensational in the Darts Premier League a fortnight ago, was very underwhelming last night, conceding five legs in a row to his great rival.

If it is to come down to those two once again, then it’s the Scotsman that is favoured. For this week at least.

bet365 have priced up The Iceman at 7/2, while they are also offering 13/2 on Snakebite.

Elsewhere In The Field

The top 32 players in the PDC Order of Merit all join in the competition in the fourth round, along with the 32 who have come through the previous three rounds.

This includes Jonny Clayton who last night looked like his mind was elsewhere – possibly Minehead – as he was shot down 1-6 by Night Four’s winner Michael van Gerwen.

The Ferret had shown some good form in the Premier League Darts up until this week, but on last night’s form, punters might want to look elsewhere.

If, though, you still fancy Jonny Clayton then bet365 have him at 7/1 to win yet another PDC title.

In three games on Thursday night in Exeter, a near back to his best Michael van Gerwen faced Jonny Clayton, Michael Smith and Peter Wright and only dropped three legs all evening.

Big Priced Machine

Of course, the returning champion James Wade is not to be dismissed.

The Machine has won this event three times but has never experienced Minehead in its full glory, having won the UK Open during the Bolton era in 2008 and 2011, and then again last year with no fans present.

Wade put a couple more points on his Darts Premier League scoreboard last night, reaching the semis, where he lost to Peter Wright. bet365 rate him as a 50/1 shot, which is surely worth an each-way punt.

After all, the world number four was a 40/1 shot last year and won it, before going on to have another decent 12 months, so it is interesting that there is an extra ten points on him this time around.

For more of an outside bet, look beyond the Premier League of Darts participants for a moment and consider the claims of Rob Cross.

After winning last season’s European Championship, Voltage can feel unlikely to have missed out on a place in Darts Premier League.

But the flip side of that is that he should be fresh from not having to travel to Premier League events every Thursday.

This could make him a threat and a deep run in the tourney is definitely not out of the question.

Darts bettors can get 28/1 on the former electrician to win at bet365.

Another stand-out name from the rest of the field is Ryan Searle who actually lives nearby.

Heavy Metal has been threatening to make a breakthrough in a TV major for a while now.

He made the Players Championship final on TV last year where he lost to Peter Wright, who branded him the future of darts immediately after the final.

Luke Humphries, who beat Searle in the opening Players Championship final of this season, reached the final here in 2021 and used this tournament as a springboard to bigger things 12 months ago. Searle is capable of doing something similar this weekend.

Punters looking to back Heavy Metal can enjoy 33/1 with bet365 who are also offering 40/1 on Luke Humphries among their darts betting odds.

Premier League of Darts Night Four Betting Tips And Predictions

gerwyn price darts premier league 2022

A fortnight ago in the Premier League of Darts we were treated to a little bit of history as current world number one Gerwyn Price finally kicked his 2022 campaign into gear.

On a night of pure darting perfection, the Welshman pinned not one but two nine darters.

He also landed one 170 checkout, 12 180s and an average of 107.58 across his three wins.

The day actually began with The Iceman making the announcement that he was about to become Rocky on the oche when he will be taking part in a charity boxing match where he will take on the former professional Rhys “Cool, Fly and Flashy” Evans on 9 April at the Valley Tavern pub in Fleur-de-lis, which is just a few miles from Price’s home town of Markham in South Wales.

Night 3

One Night In Belfast

As for the night time in Belfast, Price started with a quarter-final win over Michael Smith in which he landed ‘The Big Fish’.

He then went on to land his first perfect leg which came during a semi-final victory over Michael van Gerwen.

But he wasn’t done there, as the former world champion hit his second nine-dart finish in his 6-4 victory against James Wade in the final on his way to becoming our third different winner so far.

Price took home the five points, a cool £10k bonus and becomes the first player ever to land three televised nine darters in the same calendar year with Belfast’s pair coming after the Welshman hit a perfect leg at the Ally Pally in January when he was beaten by Michael Smith in the World Championship quarter-final.

This week the world number one meets the world number two in the third game of the night.

Jonny Clayton v Michael van Gerwen

After a fortnight off, the Darts Premier League moves to Exeter’s Westpoint where proceedings will get underway with an intriguing battle between Jonny Clayton and Michael van Gerwen.

Despite their respective rankings, it’s the Ferret that gets the nod having won seven of their last eight clashes.

The most recent of these came just three weeks ago in a Premier League of Darts semi-final in Liverpool where the Welshman, who still tops the table, came out on top 6-4.

Also, this being a short format event that’s first to six legs, it matters who throws first and this week that is Clayton who has technically been drawn as the home thrower.

Although it’s also worth noting that there aren’t many better darters against the throw than Mighty Mike and he has broken in around half of his Darts Premier League games against the throw so far, winning 13 times out of 25.

That’s a decent record considering he has only played five games, but the form is with the Welshman right now.

Michael Smith v Joe Cullen

Game number two sees Michael Smith take on Joe Cullen.

This match represents a chance for Bully Boy, the only darter left in the Premier League of Darts without a point on the board in the new format, to finally get a win under his belt.

Overall, Smith leads 10-7 in the head-to-head, so this is no gimme, but so far he has played each night’s winner in the first round and has been flattened by the three best darts players in the world despite playing OK.

Take last time in Belfast for example, where Bully Boy averaged 103.55 but was still battered by a Gerwyn Price who was back to his imperious best.

With Clayton, Peter Wright, and Price all out of the way, for now at least, high scoring Smith will fancy his chances of finally getting some points on the board knowing that one solitary break of throw could be enough to set up an encounter with the winner of the first match of the night.

Gerwyn Price v Peter Wright

This is the headline act of the night as the top two ranked darters on earth clash head-on in game three in Exeter.

Going by last their performance last time out, it’s Price that is favoured but an in form Peter Wright is not to be dismissed casually either.

Snakebite leads 19-10 in the head to head as they go into their fifth meeting in the last 12 months with the past four producing an even split between with two apiece.

Price’s number one spot is under threat, considerably so, from his rival this week who could actually have gone ahead at the weekend which gives you some indication as to how close this pair actually are.

We’ll back Price, just, but this is the game of the night and one to savour as much as it is to bet on, so just sit back and enjoy this one.

James Wade v Gary Anderson

This is the most tied fixture in Premier League Darts history with five of their past 13 meetings ending in a stalemate.

Obviously, with the new format, that cannot happen again, but it does show how little there is to choose between them.

Overall, however, Anderson leads 30-16 in their meetings and while both of these former Premier League Darts champs could go through, Anderson just about gets the nod to set up a mouth-watering clash with either Snakebite or the Iceman in the next round.

Is Michael Van Gerwen The Best Of All Time?

Is Michael Van Gerwen The Best Of All Time?

MVG PDC 2020

While he may never come close to Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor’s full career achievements, there is a case to be made that Michael van Gerwen is the best darter of all time.

Quick Michael Van Gerwen Facts and Accomplishments

NicknameMighty Mike
NationalityDutch
Date of Birth25 April, 1989
Premier LeagueWinner 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, 20119
PDC World ChampionshipsWinner 2014, 2017, 2019

His list of achievements is endless, particularly when it comes to the majors where the 27-year-old now stands bald head and shoulders above the rest of the field. A recent trophy glut cannot hide a glorious decade for the Dutch sensation who still has enough time on his hands to overtake Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor as the sport’s finest ever, an accolade many have already paid to him.

It was ten years ago that the 17-year-old from Boxtel, Holland became the youngest player ever to win a major darts title when he took down the 2006 World Masters to add to the multiple tournaments he had also collected as a teenager.

MVG darts: A Dutch prodigy

One year later he moved up, sizing up the game’s number one, Phil Taylor, which for any other teenager would have been too daunting a task. No matter.

The 18-year-old Mighty Mike took down The Power in straight sets. This was achieved as part of a quite remarkable run to the final of the Dutch Masters of Darts tournament, where he went on to hit an incredible nine-dart finish against Raymond van Barneveld, the eventual tournament winner.

Throughout his senior successes, he was also thriving at the youth level, where he reached two PDC Youth World Championship finals, allowing him to begin asserting his dominance on his peers.

PDC Young Player Of the Year Award signals futures success

In 2011, he was named as PDC Young Player of the Year, giving himself the confidence to make the following season his true breakout year. In 2012, MVG won seven Pro Tour events, hit a live televised a nine-dart leg on his way to Blackpool’s World Matchplay quarter-finals and scored his first major PDC title, the £100,000 World Grand Prix title in Dublin, that October.

He then made the final of the next televised tournament, The Grand Slam of Darts, where he perfectly executed a highly impressive 10-5 triumph over sixteen-time world champion Taylor in the last 16.

In that season’s World Championships, he eliminated defending champion Adrian Lewis before destroying James Wade in the semis and losing to Taylor in the final. Then, to cap it off, the PDC awards ceremony that had twelve months earlier crowned the Dutchman as Young Player of the Year was now awarding its newest star the Fans’ Player of the Year, PDPA Players’ Player of the Year and his second consecutive Young Player of the Year award.

Having taken no time at all to rise to fourth in the PDC Order of Merit, MVG achieved automatic qualification for the Premier League of Darts which, of course, he won in a final against The Power as the pair began to lock up the sport, refusing to let almost any other player get a look in over the following few years.

The pair met again in the final of the 2013 Players Championship which, like so many others to come, went the way of the Dutchman. He finished the season by becoming the World Champion when he defeated Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright in the final at the Alexandra Palace.

Michael van Gerwen: A Darts icon

MVG darts career highlights

From there, he has grown into one of the sport’s domineering forces as he picked up title after title in 2014 and 2015 before, this year he has won almost everything, virtually unchallenged. He has later retained his Masters, Matchplay, European Championship, Grand Slam and UK Open titles while also claiming the Premier League.

Today, he is a three-time PDC World Darts champion and five-time winner of the Premier League of Darts. Van Gerwen is the second most successful player in PDC history, behind Phil Taylor.

And it is this on which he will ultimately be measured in darting history.  While Taylor has won 84 major titles, which includes the jaw-dropping record of 16 World Championships, MVG is in receipt of 52 PDC wins and is closing in on the record. This, while Adrian ‘Jackpot’ Lewis, Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright and Gary ‘The Flying Scotsman’ Anderson all have two apiece. It would be a travesty if Van Gerwen only collects three World Championships in his career, but we can’t really see that happening, can we?

The biggest event of the year begins in a matter of weeks and, if MVG is to challenge The Power’s WC legacy, then he must start delivering at the Ally Pally. A tenner says he will.
