A back-in-form Gerwyn Price absolutely smashed Michael van Gerwen 6-1 in the final of Week Eight of the Premier League of Darts at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle. In doing so the Welshman posted the highest Premier League average in six years and won his third night overall and second in succession.

The Iceman has taken to wearing local colours as often as he can in order to finally win over the fans and this week he was decked in the black of white of Newcastle United which seemed to work once again as he recorded a staggering average of 114.96 in the final compared to MVG’s 98.48, landed five of the six 180s in the game and pinned six out of his nine doubles to take home all five points plus a cheque for £10,000.

Price also almost inflicted van Gerwen’s second whitewashing in as many weeks but narrowly missed a dart at tops for a 6-0 victory. This though only managed to merely delay the inevitable as The Green Machine clawed back one single leg leaving Price to cut MVG’s lead at the top of the table to seven points.

The Welshman started off the night by, for the second week in a row, brushing aside fellow countryman Jonny Clayton, this time by a 6-1 score line with an average of 94.55 compared to the Ferret’s 80.89. He then ended local hero Chris Dobey’s hopes of a dream night in front of his home crowd with a slightly more messy 6-4 victory.

While Price could only manage an average of 86.98 in that battle, around ten minutes later he would return to the oche to deliver his absolute A game and destroy Mighty Mike with the performance of the season so far.

Michael van Gerwen might have been unable to extend his lead at the top of the table, but he did manage wins to post wins over both Peter Wright and Nathan Aspinall which saw him seal a place in his fifth nightly final and claim a useful three points. The Dutchman hit a brilliant 150 checkout against rock-bottom Wright in Thursday’s opening quarter-final, before recording a ton-plus average in another whitewash win over Nathan Aspinall.

Earlier on in the evening, Chris Dobey had given the home fans a thrill with a spine-tingling walk-on against Michael Smith to the Newcastle United walk-out song Going Home by Mark Knopfler. This was before beating the world champion 6-4 which secured another valuable two points in his debut campaign.

Elsewhere, Aspinall finally put an end to his darting hoodoo against Dimitri van den Bergh, averaging 101 and landing seven 180s to come out on top in a dramatic last-leg decider. Van den Bergh missed a match dart at the bull in the closing stages of the match allowing Aspinall to capitalise on the Belgian’s misfortune and further cement his position in the top four as well as registering his first victory over The Dream Maker in 11 meetings.

This week the Premier League Darts roadshow rolls into Germany for Night Nine which will take place at the Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin. But what can we expect from the German capital?

Dimitri Van den Bergh v Michael Smith

We open things up in Berlin with a mid-table clash between Dimitri Van den Bergh and Michael Smith. Both players need the points, van den Bergh to climb closer to the top four, Smith to solidify his place in it. The Dream Maker from Belgium still hasn’t banked himself a nightly title whereas Smith won the evening in Glasgow on Night Three.

The Bully Boy has the second-highest average in the tournament behind Michael van Gerwen and has also chucked in more 180s than this week’s opening opponent. Smith has also taken five out of their last seven matches so has been priced up as the favourite with bet365 to come out on top once again.

The man from St Helens isn’t in the best of form right now, however, so if you are going to back him do so, but with caution. Van den Bergh is a dangerous opponent at the best of times though and could punish The Bully Boy if doesn’t bring his A game with him to Germany. If he does remember to pack it though, I expect Smith to win the first quarter-final of the evening.

Nathan Aspinall v Chris Dobey

These two last met in the first round on Night Six in Liverpool with Aspinall coming out on top in a 6-4 score line. They also met at the UK Open Darts Masters in the last four, a match that Dobey won as he would go on to win the tournament outright.

Although he has improved of late, and has that Night One win under his belt, Dobey has had a disappointing Premier League campaign depending on how you look at it.

On the one hand, he has more than shown that he belongs to be among the top eight players and does not look in any way out of his depth. On the other hand, I’m sure he feels he could be doing better in his Premier League debut. 

Aspinall has enjoyed a better season overall having picked up seven match wins compared to the debutant’s six. Dobey has the higher tournament average, while Aspinall has landed the second most 180s in the tournament. What we are saying is that these two are hard to split and this could be a really tight one with plenty of legs. We could be in for a maximum fest.

Jonny Clayton v Michael van Gerwen

A struggling Jonny Clayton throws first in match three against top-of-the-table Michael van Gerwen. Last year, Clayton won more night titles than anyone else but this year is one of the only four remaining players not to have banked a nightly win. Being in that club will be of concern to the Ferret who won this event in 2021.

Mighty Mike, the man who took Clayton’s Premier League of Darts title away from him in 2022, isn’t even playing especially well right now but still looks like the man to beat.

That being said, after he dished out a whitewashing to Nathan Aspinall, he nearly suffered the same fate himself to Gerwyn Price and was eliminated 6-0 the previous week by Chris Dobey which goes to show that the Dutchman can be got at.

While you can never write The Ferret off, it is hard to see anything other than a win for the Green Machine, potentially setting up a rematch against last week’s final conqueror Gerwyn Price.

Peter Wright v Gerwyn Price

Things don’t look like getting any easier for the luckless Peter Wright as, after being eliminated by Michael van Gerwen for the past three weeks, he faces off in the first round against a bang-in-form Gerwyn Price. Snakebite is propping up the table and has only banked one match win so far this Premier League season in what has been a dire campaign.

In contrast, Price has roared back into form and last week won his second successive night and third in total. He then followed that up by beating Dirk van Duijvenbode 8-7 in Sunday’s Interwetten European Darts Open final in Leverkusen to secure his seventh title on the European Tour.

This is all to say that everything looks like pointing to Peter Wright’s woes at the oche continuing. This is a short format match however and, in a race to six legs, Snakebite could and should be able to turn things around.

Throwing first, he does have the darts to win, I just don’t think he will. The Iceman is bidding to equal Michael van Gerwen’s three weeks in a row winning streak and could very well go on and do it.

While it was Gerwyn Price who won the Night Seven title – his second of the season – it was actually Chris Dobey who stole the headlines as he became the first player in Premier League of Darts history to bank a whitewash victory over Michael van Gerwen.

Price put in a superb performance to win the final match 6-4, posting an average of 101 over his last opponent of the evening Dobey’s 95.48. The Iceman, who earlier on in the evening had beaten his Welsh compatriot Jonny Clayton before taking down Dimitri Van den Bergh, both by 6-4 score lines, also threw in all four of the 180s in the match and landed two of the three ton-plus checkouts before finally getting over the line after missing five darts at a double in leg nine.

The win sees Price climb up to second in the table ahead of Michael Smith and one place below Michael van Gerwen.

Having won the title on Night One, Dobey wasn’t quite able to pick up his second nightly title of the season but did put in the performance of the night in winning all six legs against van Gerwen to bring the Dutchman’s three-week winning streak to an end.

Fresh from beating world champion Michael Smith 6-4 in their quarter-final clash, Dobey averaged 101.33 against Mighty Mike while also pinning four 180s, two ton-plus checkouts and landing six of his nine attempts at doubles during a superb display.

The Green Machine, who averaged 100, had been on a ten-match winning run in the Darts Premier League and started off the evening with a 6-1 trouncing of Peter Wright in the quarter-finals. MVG had been looking to win his fourth night in a row but was made to pay for missing a single dart at a double in legs three, four and five and looked stunned by his whitewashing at the hands of Dobey.

Play now moves on to Newcastle, making Night Eight a home fixture for Chris Dobey as he takes on Michael Smith in a repeat of last week’s quarter-final. This week’s fixtures are all based on league table positions following Night Seven.

This means that top plays bottom as Michael van Gerwen once again faces Peter Wright, a man he has beaten 6-1 for the last two weeks. There is also another all-Welsh meeting between Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton while Nathan Aspinall steps out against Dimitri van den Bergh but who will triumph in the North East?

Michael van Gerwen v Peter Wright

The world number two once again takes on the world number three for the third week in a row. They are not playing only one place in the PDC Order of Merit separates them, however. On the previous two occasions, there has been only one clear winner with Michael van Gerwen winning 6-1 both times.

In fact, Wright has only won one match so far this season leaving him on two points and propping up the table. Mighty Mike on the other hand is the runaway leader of the table. Although even he was humbled last week when whitewashed by losing Night Seven finalist Chris Dobey.

The Dutchman did, however, travel to Germany over the weekend for Players Championship duties and won Sunday’s event, the Players Championship 7 final in Hildesheim.

Wright, on the other hand, remains bottom of this year’s table with only one win to go beside six losses. He looks like a shadow of his former self right now and hasn’t averaged over 93 for four weeks. Even if Snakebite was to finally bank a nightly win, he will still be bottom by the close of play Thursday night.

In all, though, there isn’t any reason not to predict another win for Mighty Mike. Snakebite still can’t settle on a preferred set of darts and is woefully out of form right now. In contrast, van Gerwen’s slip-up was probably a one-off and more of a freak result and he is once again favourite to not just win this match but also the night as well. 

Nathan Aspinall v Dimitri Van den Bergh

In what is a week of repeats, Dimitri van den Bergh once again faces Nathan Aspinall. Last time out, The Dream Maker beat the Asp which really shouldn’t surprise anybody. Incredibly, the Belgian has beaten Aspinall ten times on the spin, a run that includes four Premier League of Darts meetings, two of which have come this season.

One thing that will please Aspinall is that he has thrown in the second most 180s in the competition which should give him some hope as looks to end his abysmal run against van den Bergh. He should break his duck against the Belgian at some point but whether that is this week or not is not so easy to say. The Asp can be backed, however, to pin the most maximums.

Gerwyn Price v Jonny Clayton

This is another repeat fixture from last week where seven days ago we saw Gerwyn Price win against his fellow Welshman Jonny Clayton. Price was brilliant on the two nights he has won so far but has been appalling on every Premier League outing before or since.

Happily, there are signs that he is slowly beginning to win the fans over now which seems to make him a better player. If the boo boys stay away, he could get his swagger back which makes him one of the most dangerous players in the competition.

No one knows him better than Clayton though and The Ferret is one of those players who is incredibly hard to shake off. Former Premier League of Darts champion Clayton is another player who is not enjoying things this year. 

It’s far too early for him to worry as everything can change with a few wins, but Clayton is under pressure after a couple of first-round losses and hasn’t won a night yet or even made a final. Last year, he win more than anyone even if he didn’t win the outright campaign.

One win is all can take to catapult him into the playoff places, though, but I can’t see that coming this week if the real Gerwyn Price that we saw in Nottingham last week shows up again in Newcastle.

Michael Smith  v Chris Dobey

These two also played each other in the first round a week ago with Chris Dobey upsetting the odds and knocking out the world champion. Of course, Hollywood would then go on to put in the outstanding performance of the season in whitewashing Michael van Gerwen. 

Hot on the heels of a wrist injury, The Bully Boy has been hit by a bug sadly which could impact his performance. The world champion is still good enough to win matches with his eyes closed but his consistency levels have dropped right now and suddenly that 97.5 average might be hard to hit. 

Smith certainly has struggled to find it in his last four matches, while Dobey, coming off of that thrashing of Mighty Mike should be buoyed going into a match in his home city and could pull off yet another shock result.
