Michael Smith won his first Darts Premier League night of the new season, making it three different winners in as many weeks. The Bully Boy beat Dimitri van den Bergh 6-4 in Thursday’s Glasgow final at the OVO Hydro.
Earlier on in the evening, the world champion had seen off Gerwyn Price in their quarter-final tie, before coming back from 4-2 down to win his semi-final against the tourney’s other Welshman, Jonny Clayton, in a deciding leg.
His best display, however, came in the final where he averaged 109.42 to claim the night and move to the top of the DPL table. In the final, Smith had previously led 2-0 and 3-1 before van den Bergh took out 86 on the bull in response. Smith then produced a 140 finish for a 12 darter to maintain the gap.

Legs of 13 and 14 darts from the Belgian Dream Maker saw him claw back into contention at 5-4, but hopes were short-lived as The Bully Boy effortlessly took out double ten to bring a memorable night in Scotland to a close.
In the earlier rounds, Peter Wright’s miserable run of form continued. Snakebite finds himself rooted to the bottom of the table and has failed to make it past the first round in three attempts, losing every game and failing to bank so much as a point.
This week he was shot down by Dimitri van den Bergh 6-4 who progressed into a second-round match with Nathan Aspinall. The Belgian then produced a sensational display in the last four, defeating The Asp 6-1 with a 105.73 average to please the Glasgow crowd.
Wright is the only player left not to have claimed a league point, after Jonny Clayton finally managed to get some scores on the board after picking up his first win as he averaged 103 in a 6-1 defeat of Chris Dobey, who was the winner of Night One.
Night Three’s other quarter-final loser was Michael van Gerwen. The reigning Premier League champion pinned a 170 checkout as he came back from 4-1 against Aspinall to force a deciding leg, which was edged by The Asp as a wayward Mighty Mike sprayed his darts all over the place.
The Premier League of Darts roadshow now rolls into Dublin’s 3 Arena on Thursday the 23rd of February for Night Four. World number one Smith will take on world number two Wright, while Michael van Gerwen faces Chris Dobey, Gerwyn Price meets Dimitri Van den Bergh and Jonny Clayton plays Nathan Aspinall in what is sure to be another cracking night of brilliant darting action. But who will come out on top in the Irish capital?
Michael Smith v Peter Wright
Top takes on the bottom in the opening match in Dublin as the world’s top two players in the PDC Order of Merit clash. Unsurprisingly, Michael Smith is the favourite to win this opener after putting in some superb performances and triumphing in Glasgow last time out. Bully Boy’s Premier League of Darts campaign is now firmly up and running and he has averaged 100+ in four of his six matches so far.
The St Helens star chose to give last weekend’s Players Championship events a miss in order to get some well-earned rest following a hectic start to the 2023 season so expect him to come out all guns blazing and firing on all cylinders with plenty of finishing and maximums.
The Bully Boy threw 10 180s in 30 legs last week after only managing a mere four across the opening couple of weeks. He also weighed in with at least one ton plus checkout in each of his three matches in Scotland.
Pointless Peter Wright is without a win in the Premier League and I don’t think that is going to get any better on the other side of the Irish Sea. It isn’t that he is playing particularly badly from a scoring perspective – he’s still managed to land four 100+ checkouts in the 10 legs he has won so far.
However, he has been sloppy with his doubles finishing and, given Smith’s form, that surely cannot continue if he is going to finally bank some points this week. For this reason, I’m backing Michael Smith to win in Dublin.
Gerwyn Price v Dimitri Van den Bergh
Having won so well in Cardiff, Gerwyn Price made a real mess of things in Glasgow averaging just shy of 90 in what was a scrappy quarter-final defeat to Michael Smith. Such streaky performances mean that it is hard to tell exactly what we can expect from him at the moment.
He has, of course, won a night but he is still to show us his epic blockbuster best when it comes to averages in any of the three weeks we have had so far. His best being 97.32 from his five games played.
Dimitri van den Bergh went on an encouraging run in Glasgow last week where he treated us to a superb 6-1 win over Nathan Aspinall where he averaged 105.73. It is no surprise, then, that the Dream Maker is landing his maximums significantly more regularly than The Iceman at 0.33 per leg compared to the Welshman’s 0.22 and, based on last week alone, that is enough for me to go with the Belgian this week.
Jonny Clayton v Nathan Aspinall
It looks very much as though Jonny Clayton might be about to come into a rich vein of form following a less-than-impressive start to the season. Despite his struggles to pick up Premier League wins, The Ferret has been playing pretty well and last week averaged 102.56 in a 6-1 win over Chris Dobey, who himself averaged 101.6.
The Welshman also looked in good form when producing another fine display in a narrow 6-5 defeat to eventual Night Three winner Michael Smith.
Over the weekend, at the Pro Tour events, he averaged 100+ in five out of his eight matches, including a high of 111.95 on Saturday. On Sunday, he followed that up with a 104.48 when he lost to eventual Players Championship 4 champion Dirk van Duijvenbode, who posted 108.08 in the same game.
If The Ferret can get past Nathan Aspinall – and despite his opponent winning more Premier League matches so far this season, I think he will – then I wouldn’t back against him to win the night, let alone this quarter-final tie.
The Asp blew hot and cold last week, stunning Michael van Gerwen 6-5 in an untidy night opener before averaging 88.18 in a miserable 6-1 loss to Dimitri van den Bergh in the semis. He faired much the same over the weekend too which is why I have opted for Welshman this week.
Aspinall has, however, been landing 180s much more prolifically than Clayton this season, with 0.35 per leg in the Premier League and 0.31 on the Pro Tour. The Ferret’s respective rates are 0.20 and 0.28.
Chris Dobey v Michael van Gerwen
Michael van Gerwen had been going along smoothly in this year’s Premier League of Darts until things came to an abrupt end last week. Mighty Mike has headed to Glasgow sitting pretty at the top of an admittedly early Premier League table but a shock opening night defeat to Hollywood Chris Dobey knocked him off his perch and the Dutchman will now be out for revenge in this week’s rematch.
This short first to six legs format can prove to be a real leveller and, even when he’s averaging big numbers like he did against Gerwyn Price a week previously where he posted a score of 110, it wasn’t enough for MVG who was also well below his best last week when he lost to Nathan Aspinall. I expect The Green Machine to win here tonight but bet365’s 4/6 is a little short for my liking, especially given that he is coming up against a player who has figured out how to beat him.
Hollywood scored very well when losing to Jonny Clayton last week where he averaged close to 102. However, he blew nine out of his attempts at double and that can’t happen again if is to bank at least two more points in Dublin. Despite the fact that he has only managed just one maximum in his last two matches, which is 18 legs, I fancy Dobey to pin the most 180s. It will be unlikely to save him, however.
