All The Favourites Win In Darts Premier League

Following the withdrawal of an already-eliminated Kim Huybrechts, who had suffered a personal bereavement, a reduced card took place last Thursday in Cardiff and offered little in the way of surprises.

Favourites Michael van Gerwen, Phil Taylor, Gary Anderson and Raymond van Barneveld all won their respective games and, to complete the set, Peter Wright was awarded the points for the forfeited Huybrechts match.

The week that was in the Darts Premier League

Phil Taylor vs Jelle Klaasen

Snakebite was awarded a default 7-0 win for what would have been the opening match against Huybrechts, which meant that the first dart of the night was thrown by Phil “The Power” Taylor against the also already-eliminated Jelle Klaasen.

Klaasen found himself with a 4-1 lead but Taylor proved class is permanent as he fought back with an unanswered run of four straight legs followed by a 180 in the final leg to take the match 7-5 and keep himself in with a chance of a top four finish.

Gary Anderson vs Adrian Lewis

The world number two was the next out at the Motorpoint Arena where he produced arguably the night’s most impressive performance, posting an average of 107.13 as he dismissed Adrian Lewis.

Anderson was in top form throughout; “Jackpot” had no chance as Anderson hit five 180s and a 170 checkout in his 7-3 rout.

Raymond van Barneveld vs James Wade

Making light of his own admission that at his age he is unable to string a run of results together, Raymond van Barneveld recorded his fourth successive Premier League victory with a never-in-doubt win over James Wade.

Having beaten MVG last week and Gary Anderson the week previous, Barney almost recorded a whitewash against a poor and fading James Wade, who took until the fourth leg before landing a double. However, a Wade comeback was nipped firmly in the bud by the Dutchman, who ran out the 7-2 winner.

Dave Chisnall vs Michael van Gerwen

Another Dutch winner closed the night in emphatic style as Dave “Chizzy” Chisnall was made to feel the full wrath of a wounded Michael van Gerwen, who had lost for the first time in 45 televised matches a week previous.

Unsurprisingly topping the table, Mighty Mike crushed Chizzy 7-1, helped by an average of 104.25, although the St Helens man did hit five 180s and averaged over 100 himself. However, “Chizzy” was let down by his inability to land the doubles.

From here on out, the remaining eight players will all meet again before a top four is determined. This quartet will progress to Final’s Night at the O2 Arena in London on May 18.

Let’s take a look at this week’s matches and see if we can find some value.

James Wade vs Michael van Gerwen

As Wade’s challenge begins to fade, “The Machine” will need a result here in the night’s opener in order to stay in contention. Unfortunately for James, he meets world number one Michael van Gerwen, fresh from an almost-unanswered victory over Dave Chisnall in last week’s closer.

Wade himself fared little better than Chizzy last week, going down 7-2 to an imperious Barney. Like most darts fans, I wouldn’t bet against MVG making it a double Dutch horror show for Wade this week.

Raymond van Barneveld vs Phil Taylor

Our second Dutchman is up next in what could be a momentous night for darts. This, potentially, could be the last-ever match between darting giants Barney and “The Power”. Obviously, given the quality of these two players and their tendency to win tournament matches, that scenario is unlikely – but the threat remains all the same.

For a whole slew of reasons, this is as tough to call as they come. I’ll leave it up to form and back RVB – although history tells us to never bet against Phil Taylor, especially given Barney’s concession that he cannot play at his top level in back-to-back matches. With a second match later in the evening, the Dutchman may have eyes on an easier tie with James Wade.

Dave Chisnall vs Peter Wright

Far easier to call (or at least, it should be) is the third match of the evening which pairs the faltering Dave Chisnall with Peter Wright, who was given a bye last week due to Huybrechts’ withdrawal.

Wright has been in decent form over the last month or so and so should emerge victorious here. One 7/2 bet worth taking is this beauty from SkyBet under the match trebles tab:

  • Wright to win the match
  • Wright to hit the outright highest checkout
  • Wright to score more 180s than Chisnall

Gary Anderson vs Adrian Lewis

Much the same will be expected of compatriot Gary Anderson in the following match, where he faces two-time world champion Adrian Lewis.

“Jackpot” unquestionably has the ability to hurt Anderson, but now that we have reached the business end of the tournament, we should expect Anderson to go up a level performance-wise. If he does, there should only be one outcome in this tie.

James Wade vs Raymond van Barneveld

The evening’s last match will see James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld step out for the second of their double headers in order to satisfy the card following the departures of Kim Huybrechts and Jelle Klaasen.

On the face of it, Barney’s brilliant form of late would, should and does make him our favourite – and yet, given he will have already stepped up to the oche earlier in the evening (and has complained about playing once weekly already), will a second match in as many hours be asking too much? It’s a tricky one but he would be a popular addition to the final four so we’ll stick with Barney.

Darts Premier League accumulator

So then, this week’s accumulator will be MVG, draw, Wright, Anderson and Barney which pays out 22.46 to the pound at Betway.

Barney, by the way, is 14/1 with Bet365 for an outright tournament win. Given his form, an each-way bet which pays a quarter of the odds for a runner-up finish looks very tasty.

Raymond Van Barneveld Ends Michael Van Gerwen’s Record Streak

In the seventh night of the Darts Premier League, world number one Michael van Gerwen smashed the record for unbeaten televised matches with 44 unanswered games only to lose his 45th to countryman Raymond van Barneveld less than two hours later.

Darts Premier League: the latest

The record, previously held by Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, was beaten courtesy of a 7-4 victory over James Wade in the night’s opener. The dangerous Dutchman landed eight 180s and closed out in style with a 120 checkout.

The fall of Michael van Gerwen

Mighty Mike was forced to play a double header after forfeiting Exeter’s round five with a back injury and so turned out again later for the night’s closing game against Barney. A second game of the night proved one step too far against an inspired van Barneveld who ran out the 7-5 winner.

Phil Taylor vs Peter Wright

Taylor, in inspired form, led throughout as Snakebite consistently missed the doubles, only to stage a brilliant fightback from 6-3 down (including an electric 156 checkout) to make sure the match went all the way down to the wire.

At this point, it looked like those of us who backed the draw would get rewarded until the temperamental Snakebite again failed to finish, allowing The Power to take full advantage and claim a well-earned 7-5 victory.

Lewis and Anderson expel Huybrechts and Klaasen

We were spared the drama of Judgement Night as the relegations of both Kim Huybrechts and Jelle Klaasen were confirmed following defeats to Gary Anderson and Adrian Lewis respectively.

Huybrechts went down with a whimper as a brutal Anderson won 7-2; Klaasen barely did any better as Adrian ‘Jackpot’ Lewis ensured the Dutchman’s elimination by way of a 7-5 victory.

All this means that Barney now moves on to third in the table while MVG replaces Peter Wright at the top.

Darts Betting Tips

So, we move on to Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena for what should have been Judgement Night. However, we know the two players to have missed the cut.

It was always likely be Jelle Klaasen and Kim Huybrechts, although Dave ‘Chizzy’ Chisnall did seem to flirt with the idea for a while. The question now will be whether the eliminated duo, playing only for pride, can raise their game on the way out the door.

Kim Huybrechts vs Peter Wright

In Huybrechts’ case, I cannot see it. He takes on Peter Wright in the night’s opener and I fully expect Snakebite, loser last week, to return to winning ways here. That being said, Snakebite does drop shots with a stunning regularity for such a top player.

Looking for value in the market isn’t easy this week but the Belgian to be the first to break throw isn’t out of the question and well worth considering given the 11/10 price on offer with Bet365, especially if Snakebite starts as slowly and as poorly as he did a week ago.

Phil Taylor vs Jelle Klaasen

The second game of the evening presents a different challenge altogether. Other than Barney, there are few players tougher to read than The Power these days as the ageing pair rarely play well two weeks in a row. That said, even on an off day it would be madness to back against Taylor against such opposition.

Raymond van Barneveld vs James Wade

I think that despite the Dutchman’s brilliant form over the last couple of weeks, including his brilliant win against MVG, Wade might very well just put a stop to the run here. It is probably smarter to leave this one off the accumulator, but there really is no fun in that, so Wade it is.

The best of the rest

Elsewhere, Adrian Lewis, a shadow of his former self despite a win last week, should be no match for Gary Anderson. League leader Michael van Gerwen should definitely come out on top against Dave Chisnall in the night’s closer.

Darts accumulator and betting tips

This week’s, accumulator is Wade, Taylor, Anderson, MVG and Wright.

This comes in at a pay-out rate of 11/1 with event sponsors Betway.

Wright, by the way, has drifted out in the overall market following last week’s defeat – his first in the competition.

SkyBet are offering 11/2 on the Scotsman who, although dropping down the table to second last week, remains only a point off MVG at the top.

Double Dutch Darts Delight: Barney and MVG Win In Rotterdam

A packed crowd in Rotterdam were treated to the spectacle of two Dutch masters securing victory last Thursday, when Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld both came through night six of the Darts Premier League victorious.

The former required a much-needed fightback to turnaround a 3-0 lead established by arch-rival Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, eventually closing out the match 7-4 in front of a sold-out Ahoy Arena. The result sees Mighty Mike remain unbeaten and keeps him in touch with Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright in the table, who remains a point ahead having played one game more.

Before MVG’s triumph, his compatriot also provided the home crowd with the result they wanted when he smashed world number two Gary Anderson 7-2. Anderson could not handle a brilliant Barney who averaged 103.71, landing five 180s before rounding it all off with a superb 156 checkout.

Unsurprisingly, Peter Wright overcame Dave Chisnall without too much resistance. Snakebite continued his good run of form with a 7-4 win against the St Helens man despite playing within himself.

Elsewhere, James ‘The Machine’ Wade defeated Jelle Klaasen 7-3 to leave the other competing Dutchman propping up the rest of the table with two weeks left before the cut. For Wade, this was a victory that ended a three-game winless run and now climbs up to third.

Kim Huybrechts is another player fighting for survival and, with relegation looming, couldn’t afford to lose 7-3 to Adrian Lewis last week. That he did, though, in a bad-tempered match where he blew his cool following an on-stage row with Lewis that led to Jackpot winning six legs in succession, leaving the Belgian without a win in the league so far this year.

Premier League Darts betting tips for this week

First up at the Manchester Arena this Thursday is Michael van Gerwen who makes the first of his two appearances in a week with a match against James Wade, the league’s champion in 2009.

The Dutchman has won their last six meetings and with a superior tournament average of 104 to Wade’s 94, looks a good shout to extend that run here. That said, MVG may pace himself knowing that he has a second game later on in the evening, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if this game was still tied after 4 legs, which is available at 7/4 with Bet365.

What should be one of the night’s easier to call matches comes next as Gary Anderson plays Kim Huybrechts, who hasn’t recorded a win in this year’s League and surely won’t start against the world number two.

Anderson is followed by another Scot as Peter Wright who takes on the legend that is Phil Taylor. Wright is on a great run of form, while Taylor seems to be looking less interested by the week as retirement looms. With this in mind, it’s probably worth backing Wright and yet I fancy it to be one of those weeks where the old Phil Taylor stands up. After a run of four games without a win, he needs to. If he does, can inflict damage on Snakebite. Splitting the difference, we’ll put this one down as a draw.

It’s Jelle and the Jackpot next out with bottom of the pile Klassen taking on Adrian Lewis. I doubt even a relegation scrap can lift the Dutchman from tenth place, so would back a Lewis win every time. Far more interesting is the all Dutch affair taking shape in the night’s final game.

MVG returns to the oche to face off against Raymond van Barneveld who last week emphatically dumped out Gary Anderson. He’ll need to summon up something similar if he is to get the same outcome this time and it’s doubtful he can produce this two weeks in a row.

However, with the world number one having played earlier that night, there may be a slim chance of a Barney win. I’m tempted to leave this one out of this week’s acca but will be brave and back a draw; it’s certainly worth it. An accumulator on MVG, Anderson, draw, Lewis, draw at SkyBet pays out at 82.06/1.

Now that the league has settled enough, we know where the likely winners will come from and so it could prove valuable to get behind a Scottish player to win the tournament. This would include top spot Scot Peter Wright or Gary Anderson, twice world champion. The Flying Scotsman is deceivingly low down in the table but could well find himself in the top three (with Wright) by the end of the night meaning that the 9/4 on offer with Betway wont hang around long.
